Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?

My female cat Bubble is pregnant im guessing it happened around about the 1st of December because i caught her and one of my males doing the dirty on my kitchen table! From what i can gather she will be due anytime in the next few days but i just want to make sure that i have everything ready incase she needs me to help, iv never had a pregnant cat before so its all new to me and im just going to copy what videos i have seen and what i have read up on the internet. I have no idea if it is her first litter or not because i took her in a few months back because she was in a right state off whoever had her.
Shes seen the vet and she said she will be expecting 6-8 kitties i think she looks to small to have that many but im no vet.

I have made her a few boxes up around the house and shes going to be spending the next few nights in the bedroom away from the boys because they run riot all day and night and i dont want them to disturb her when she does have the babies.
I was just wondering what i should have with me when she does go into labour and what are the most common signs of labour. I read somewhere that they leak a few days before they give birth is this true? I have seen no leaking yet.

Thanks to all who reply to my essay lol.

There is a sticky just above this thread on what you need to have.

Watch out for the plug coming out ( a mucous glutinous plug) and for her nesting. Mine never leaked. THe waters don't break, each kitten tends to be delivered in it's own intact sac that mum breaks - or you if she doesn't. SOmetimes they break during the birthing process but you won't see much liquid.

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?

Why didnt you take your girl to the vet & get her a mismate (or whatever the alternative is for cats) injection right away after you 'caught' her & 1 of your Toms shagging on the kitchen table.

This was obviously an unwanted mating & you could have prevented some probably unwanted kittens from being born. Maybe you'll find homes for the kittens, but are you aware of the cat rescue crisis???? If you are, you are an entirely selfish person. If you're not, I think you ought to do some reading on this subject & also get the rest of your entire cats (male & female) neutered/spayed asap please.

I hope everything goes well or your cat & the resulting babies during labour, but honestly....You..............Get Responsible.

I apologise if I seem mean, but yours was an entirely preventable situation & you allowed it to go ahead anyway. For who knows what reason!

There isnt a mis-mate but as soon as they mate you can just neuter them, its lik the morning after pill for dogs and humans, no babies exist, just neuter your pets

It can be done at 3 months plus, even earlier, just no need for it these days, esp when you watch them mate and dont even read up for 9weeks then ask questions It never a 'unwanted' mating, just remember that!

You need to keep her in one room AWAY from ALL other cats, watch out for mucus plug, panting and pushing, sleep in the same room as her, do you know anything about helping deliver the kittens? or if one isnt breathing?
-8 kittens is ALOT do you know how to top up feeding or hand feed if mum has no milk? you need to weigh them daily to make sure they are gaining weight.

cant think what else to write but there are loads of threads here with lots of information and sticky threads.

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?

Gimpet Cat Toilet: great deals on cat litter trays and boxes at zooplus

4 might be too much, take out the paper, mums like to dig it will go everywhere and get covered in blood - hard to change quickly - done it myself, wish I never! just pop to sainsburys buy a bed sheet and cut it into pieces and a towel, we also buy blankets, we put the towel at the bottom NOT the top as kittens claws get caught! then layer the sheets then blanket then sheet! = soft and warm = diggable!

As mum gives birth you can remove a sheet if its very dirty leaving a cleaner once underneath, OR if you have 2 of these set up (sometimes I do) keep them the same, mum gives birth in one make it dirty, you quickly move her and kittens into the new one, mum will still have blood on her and bleed so need to change the next day, so keep LOTS of sheets handy and wash everyday on a 90degree wash.

also read the cost of a litter above and things you need with you when the litter is due.

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?

Why ,if you can find "pet forum" can you not find what to do if your female cat has been mated. This was obviously not a planned litter so the responsible thing would have been to have this poor girl spayed.Rescues are full to bursting with unwanted kittens/cats,why are you adding to the problem.

I'd have said, more a bunch of realists who are all too aware of the rescue crisis going on in the UK, and are greatly bothered that people don't take the simple steps to help prevent it becoming worse.

That being said, to the original poster as others have suggested, be sure to read through the stickies in this forum, and make sure you have your vets phone numbers (both normal & after hours if a different number) on hand in case your girl needs assistance.

Also bare in mind that all of the previous poster have the best interests of your girl in mind (rather than you as her owner), so although their comments may seem harsh now, the same people would jump in with advise if needed during labour & delivery so don't be afraid to ask any questions you may have.

As an aside, something you may not be aware of is that cats can come back into heat fairly quickly after having kittens - so if you haven't already done so, you should get your boy(s) neutered immediately, and keep your girl seperated from them (and confined in the house) until you are able to have her done once the kittens have left.

Also, it is best for the kittens if they can remain with mum until they are 13 weeks old, as in the later weeks of this time mum will teach them many vital lessons about being a happy, well socialised cat. Don't forget that they also need to be vacinated twice in this time (at 9 & 12 weeks).

Yay i know, was only joking but it does seem that anyone on here who has an unplanned litter cat or dog has all the joy took out if it by being blasted for not being neutered. I am well aware there is a homing crisis i just think some people should lighten up a bit
