Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?
She will be due on or about 65 days from when you found them mating - remember it's possible you didn't witness the first mating. Google will find you plenty of on-line cat pregnancy due date calculators.
I gave the queen I fostered last year a washable cat nest and fleece as bedding, and I used a puppy pad in another nest, on some more fleece and a heat pad, to pop the first kittens on while she got on with delivering the rest. She wasn't paying them any attention, if she had been cleaning them I would have left them with her. I changed it all the next day. There is lots and lots of information on the Internet about cats having kittens, some of the best is on the FAB website - fabcats : feline advisory bureau - the website dedicated to feline wellbeing. Agree with the 13 weeks advice, though they are real little people by then and saying goodbye can be hard. The ones I fostered were for a Cats Protection branch, I kept emailing photos to the woman I was fostering for and I gather they helped her get homes for them. I would start looking for homes once they are 2-3 weeks old. Allow people to visit, make sure they wash their hands before touching the kittens. Don't give them away - it costs a lot of money for food & cat litter and someone who can't afford £80+ for a kitten can't really afford a kitten. Contact your vet about flea and worm control. Please get your other cats neutered ASAP, and check with your vet when this one can be neutered - some will do it while she is still feeding, others demand you wait until they are weaned. |

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?
I'm no expert, but a couple of things spring to mind not already mentioned:
Please keep your males away from her when she gives birth, and from the kittens after. Males can and will kill kittens (I've read that a lot on here) Goodness how have you lived with the smell of intact males in the house! From what I understand, it's not pleasant, and if they haven't been spraying everywhere, you're really really lucky. Someone else said you're getting the boys neutered, so good for you! Please get her spayed as soon as the kittens are weaned. She'll be happier for it. And best of luck with the birth and the kittens. I suppose it's too late now to cry over the spilt milk. They'll be here soon, so carefully vet your home choices for them, don't let them go until 12 weeks and vaccinated, enjoy them and the experience as it is now inevitable, and give us some piccies.

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?
I got my boys done today to prevent her having anymore. I do feel bad that i let it happen basically. When the kittens are weaned she is getting her op too. I have sorted out 3 homes up to now for 3 of them and they will be going to family members. Thanks to all for your helpful comments on what to do and look out for.

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?
Now you see - I hate this kind of post - I wrote a sensible completely non judging reply and yet get lumped in with being a killjoy! It's a killjoy to say such things and not give any advice yourself! It stops people like me posting any more cos we just get slated anyway. TB offered very good advice too. Is she also a killjoy? And a little bit of education thrown in isn't a bad thing.
If we all went 'ooh, goody more moggy kittens - unplanned and unexpected - hooray' we would be irresponsible.

Re: Signs of labour and what should i have with me when it happens?
Quote:
Seriously, I have always found two kittens easier as they spend so much energy playing with each other that I don't have to worry about that part of their bringing up. Obviously I provide food, but also lots of cuddles and so on, and of course their bed is my bed. It worked really well last time I got kiittens, as I had an old cat that wasn't into playing. He was able to be aloof while they burnt up energy and being orientals they had a lot of energy to burn. |
