Help, need advice xx

Hi there, dont normally post in this section but know the dog section there are lovely people so im hoping the same here in the cat section. here goes and please dont shoot me down..

about a year ago i took on a lovely female cat, she was full grown when we got her and were told she was spayed and vaccinated, although didnt get any proof of this, we had her revaccinated just incase but didnt give the spaying a second thought, anyway shes mostly an indoor cat but a few weeks ago she did get out, i took her to the vets on friday as she had been putting weight on and also has a limp which i wanted to get checked, vet has examined her and says she is pregnant 4 weeks plus!!!! He has said if im very set on it he will spay her and remove kittens, although he didnt seem to keen and said due to increased blood supply to whomb it could cause problems.

my question is would i be wrong to get her spayed at this later stage? or should i let her continue with the pregnancy?
would realy apriciate some advice as got to call vets back tomorrow to tell them what i wish to do. thanks x

In these cases I really think it is a personal choice. Some would vehemently advocate spaying others would not. So, she is now 4 weeks pregnant out of 9 (65 days being gestation) so the kittens are basically formed just need to grow. That's one side . . .the other is that there are hundreds of cats in rescue that each of those kittens could 'potentially' be taking the place of (i.e whoever has a kitten could have gone to rescue - however not all can get a cat from a rescue)

It is riskier to spay but . . . .

I have issues (personally) once past a certain point, about 6 and 1/2 weeks - mainly because when I was 8 my dad had my cats kittens terminated when she was about due (about day 60)! I was horrified and find it hard now for that late a spay - but I would say 4 weeks is okay.

It really is a difficult choice but when all is said and done it is probably for the best that she is spayed now. Whatever choice you make there are risks even though most cats seem to go through giving birth without too much trouble.

Up to you really, but read my cost of breeding post, and all the things you have to learn and do before they arrive... and the health tests you now need to to, herpes/chlamidiya...she can catch these from sex (might have mated more than 10cats who knows) and if she has this she can pass to kittens

Can spay her now at only 4weeks gone, just a more invasive neuter, I had a girl neutered at 9weeks gone, kittens had died and were rotting inside her and rotted her womb and she was pouring with blood & puss.

operation went fine to remove them, needed stay at hospital and lots of anti'bs asnd was fine after, personally Id neuter, but up to you, its not too late. If he is a good vet then they can even neuter during calls, just depends how good the vet is.

Re: Help, need advice xx

hi and thank you for the replies, i am leaning more towards the spay side, i breed dogs and if im totally honest not realy a cat person hence getting an older cat which we were told was spayed, only worrying bit is my daughter knows as she was with me at the vets, but sort of thinking i can just say the vet got it wrong, just needed a few people to sort of reasure me i wasnt been cruel or nasty for doing it, shes a lovely cat but im sure that all the cats in rescue are so no real reason to bring more kittens into the world, just think ill be feeling guilty for a while x

How old is your daughter? Too young too understand the truth I take it? You could always tell her that there was something wrong if she's old enough to accept that.
Don't feel guilty

I wouldn't do it - the thought of killing the babies
I would raise the babies, have them early spayed / neutered and then find them good homes.
But it is your choice, if you are not in a position to properly raise and care for them then ....

If she where my cat I would have her spayed ASAP. She could pass all sorts of things on to her kittens and there are already far too many cats. I wouldn't leave it too long though as it would be a much bigger op if the kittens where much more developed.

What about all the healthy kittens and cats in rescue centres? Surely it's better to give asentient being a chance at a good home over a blob of cells currently residing in a cat's uterus?

They are live kittens, not a blob of cells
So do they not deserve to live just as much any other cat?

This is my opinion and how I feel about it, you do not have to agree with it. We all have our own views....
