I think that it will probably be easier than with a blind cat, well, in my opinion that is. Not sure if it will hold her back much, maybe use hand commands from when she is doing something naughty or dangerous? as she wont hear you calling her etc ![]()

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(
Don't be sad! It really is not a huge impediment at all.....I presume though that she will be an indoor cat? Are all your others, I cannot remember.
I think deaf cats are Special in many ways, certainly Millie is. I agree that starting to teach some hand signals would be a good idea, Millie was around 8 months when I got her ( and very stubborn ) so this has not really worked out for us but I know others that do use them. Deaf cats seem to love to climb and sleep in in-accessible places, maybe it is a security thing. They can appear to be destructive....For most cats if they knock something off a shelf the resulting noise is so shocking that they dont repeat the action or go to that place again. Not so deaf cats, in fact Millie knocks things off on purpose to get my attention! She has no problem communicating with the other cats or they with her so do not worry about that. I cant think of anything else relevant right now but give me a shout if you have any questions. |

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(
I had a partially deaf cat, the only way we could get his attention was by making a lot of noise
![]() I used to wave his food spoon under his nose when it was tea time, but he always heard the biscuit box. He was let outside, but back then I didn't know any different, we lived in the country away from busy roads. But he never went far. If I had my time again I would make him an indoor cat.

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(
I can't even say that Millie has a great sense of 'vibration' either, as when she wants to she falls into the deepest of slumbers which are not disturbed by my banging the front door or walking on the wooden floor.
She does spend much of her time in fairly close contact to me though and wakes up to follow me whenever I move from the sofa or bed. Just to make you laugh....there is a man who posts over on MSE and when he lost his dear old cat a few years ago he took home a deaf white cat from the Rescue centre soon after. He took her back less than 48 hours later as she had wrecked his house, pulled down shelves, smashed crockery etc so I dont think that Milie's quirks are unique, I think they are common to deaf cats. ![]() She is pretty talkative as well ( which I like in a cat ) with a rather harsh screechy miaow on waking. |
