Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

No experience, but I just wanted to say that it's a shame, but she's beautiful and so lucky to have landed where she is. I know you'll take the best care of her and I'm sure she'll grow up just fine. From all I've read, cats seem to adapt to all sorts of things, and since she's never known what it's like to hear, then she'll never miss it I suppose.

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

She is so lovely, you and her both wanted to stay together, and now you will be - she lives up to her name.

As for practical advice, I'm afraid I dont have any - lots of love x

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

Deaf cats have no problems adapting to a safe and loving indoor enviroment and you learn a lot when having a deaf cat. Don't see it as something bad, see it as a great learning opprtunity! Your cat doesn't suffer from the deafness and won't, if you learn to communicate with her using all her other senses. I've bred and raised a deaf kitten and he's quite a character. So sweet, loving, safe and affectionate. He's a stable by who take great care of his new family (two owners, two Devon Rex friends and a dog).

No other animals seems to care about his deafness, they learn to communicat with each other as well. I've really learned a lot about using body language, vibrations and making eye contact. Something that's enhanced my understanding for hearing cats as well.

I really can't say I'm sorry but I was dead scared when I figured out that my little boy was deaf so I understand what you're going through but don't worry. It'll be fine.

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

Thankyou all :-)you are my lovely friends here who never let me down xx

Angel is adorable, well i first noticed time off over christmas how she jumped on Henry the hoover!!! Jack and Holly ran away!! yet there she was chasing me, then buried in my bed I couldn't find her one day only to realise she was halfway down under my quilt, sleeping inbetween my pillows, and crying not meowing, i can't describe it any other way!! spoke to my vet and as soon as i mentioned her startling blue eyes it hit me like a ton of bricks, doh, i know i'm busy but i did feel stupid for brushing it off

Anyway, she is adorable, it doesn't seem a problem to me... Tinks is in door, the other two aren't but that isn't like they are out much either, (they are quite old now) just a quick pop to the garden and they are back in, so two indoor and two semi-outdoor cats, in for a penny in for a pound etc...!!!

xx

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

She is so pretty! I dont think it will be a problem as most cats are "deaf" anyway!!
Being serious, I had 2 litter mate cavaliers (still got one of them Phoebe 12.5)
It wasnt until they were 2 years that I began to suspect one was deaf. I had always just thought she was naughtier than Phoebe as she didnt come very often when I called her. As there were 2 of them Lily just followed Phoebe when I called them or shouted "biscuits!" She didnt know she was deaf, she knew no different..When she was off lead she always ran in front , but turned often to check we were all still following. You have to be careful not to scare them when there asleep, wake her up by gently stroking her. Good luck

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

I rescued an old cat whose slaves emigrated to Australia, and who suddenly realized their precious darling might not survive the journey. So I took her.
According to them, her hearing was getting slightly worse, but I soon found out she was stone eeaf. But they had a wooden floor, so she reacted to the vibrations. In our concrete house, that didn't work.

She coped very well, even as an outdoor cat, though I made sure she could not leave the garden. She was the oldest cat in our household, 16 years old, arthritic and stone deaf, but within a month she was the matriarch, and remained so till a few days before her death.

So a deaf cat can live a wonderful life and - in a protected environment - even be a leader. As long as you keep her indoors or catproof your garden, she will be just fine.

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

I am sorry that Angel is deaf, but so pleased you are keeping her. I am sure it will all work out well, and there is some great advice on here. I suppose the biggest problem is making sure they can't get out, and if she has never been out, she won't know what she is missing. Looking forward to all the updates.

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

Awwww Pips, I am so sorry to read that Angel is deaf. However, as has been said already, she will still enjoy a full and happy life. My old Slugger was deaf for about 4 years before he died and it didn't detract from his quality of life in any way.

She is the prettiest little thing and I'm sure you'll be able to train her with hand-signals having had her from birth.

As I said before - life has a funny way of giving you what you want. You wanted to keep Angel from the start but were having trouble justifying doing so. Now you have the reason you needed to ensure she stayed with you.

I look forward to seeing piccies of her as she grows into a beautiful young lady - just like both her mommies!!!!!

Now start posting your threads in Cat Chat where even MORE people can admire all your babies (and where I won't keep missing your threads because I don't come into Breeding very often.....!!!! )

Re: Deaf Kitten :-(

Aww, little babe... so even more special than you originally thought Tarka was deaf in his latter years and Misi is now deaf. As with Tarka, Misi is brilliant at interpreting hand gestures and facial signals. I just make sure I don't catch her by surprise and make sure she sees me before I touch her so I don't make her jump. Pity Simba's not quite as considerate... The only disconcerting thing I've found with deaf cats is the profound sleep they fall into. My heart's skipped a beat many a time!
She'll be absolutely fine, your little angel
