Exclamation Newborn kittens needing advice

My cat has just given birth to 5 kittens all seem well but I can still feel one inside her. The last one was born at 4am, how long should I wait to see if she has the other one herself.or if I need to call the vets.

Also none of the kittens are feeding. They aren't screaming and are all searching for it. I've tried putting them on the teats but they won't feed.

Any advice greatly received

Re: Newborn kittens needing advice

My Candy has had 4 litters. She had 4 kittens for the first 3 litters and only 2 for the last 1. On her 1st litter there was a gap of almost 6 hours between the 1st one born and the last one. I was with her the whole time.

Re: Newborn kittens needing advice

Hi, I hope mummy is ok now, but if not definitely ring the vet for advice, does mummy seem to be in any discomfort? I hope the kittens are feeding now but if they aren't definitely speak to the vets and get hold of some royal canin milk with the bottle and teats in and start to supplement them.

I am at work so wont be able to come back to this thread until tonight but I hope all goes well.

Re: Newborn kittens needing advice

It is very common for the kittens to be unable to feed properly until the last one is born. Don't worry yet, as long as the babies are warm there is no cause for immediate alarm.

Re: Newborn kittens needing advice

When mum has finished labour, I'd suggest expressing some of her milk if she'll permit it. The smell often draws them to the teat, and the drops of milk already there encourage them to suck.

Re: Newborn kittens needing advice

Well I gave her a couple of hours and they all appear to be feeding now and I have had another feel of her tummy and im as sure as I can be that there isnt another kitten in there.

I called the vets as soon as they opened and spoke to one of the vets and he was very helpful and said that what I felt the first time was probably her womb still contracting as it was pretty soon after she had the last one.

He said that if I was in any doubt to take her in and he would check her out. I wanted to avoid taking her in as the birth was pretty stressful for her and putting her in the travel box would have really stressed her out. She isnt a big fan of it. :-)

I have weighed them all and they all seem like good weights but I will be keeping an eye on her and the babies to make sure.

Thank you to all those who replied and helped me out.
