BSH baby with a broken leg :(

Got home from the horses this afternoon to find one of the 9 week old babies limping on her foreleg. She was all out of sorts and mewing when you touched it and holding it like a dead thing.

Perfect, on a Sunday too! Que a mad panic to find a vets that is open on a Sunday afternoon. Rush her down there, worse suspicion pretty much confirmed, suspected fracture

She's been given pain relief and has to be starved over night ready for her appointment tomorrow morning (please god don't let her need an op!). I was quite concerned about the idea of starving such a young kitten over night but vet assured me she'd be fine.

I'm also so upset at the idea of leaving her there tomorrow, she's never been away from mommy or her siblings and its not ideal to have her first experience locked in a cage scared witless. Poor little mite.

No idea how she can have done it, romping too hard with the others I suppose and she has to be shut in a carry-cage tonight to keep her rested (yerr right, massive tantrum and mad digging will really rest her leg!)

She seems so out of sorts and sorry for herself, at least she seems easier now she's had some pain relief though.

Her new mommy met me at the vets, (only lives 3 minute drive from me) she's being very good about it all although was very upset. I have offered her her deposit back and first choice of our next litter but she's besotted with her girl and won't hear of it.

Anyone else had a baby with a break? My research suggests that baby bones heal very quickly and very well, is this the case?

Re: BSH baby with a broken leg :(

poor babba

kittens - like kids - are more prone to 'greenstick' fractures (break doesn't extend through full width of bone) and they are still growing so it will heal rapidly - when we got our puppy Max 15 odd years ago one of his littermates broke his front leg and it was fully healed in about 4 weeks!

your vet will be able to give you an outline for healing in your little one's case - kitty rough and tumble can sometimes go OTT and accidents happen - thank goodness you managed to get straight to a vets

is there anyway you could put kitten with mum in a large dog crate? if she has someone to snuggle she will more likely rest and the rest of the litter have each other - I assume they are weaned at 9 weeks apart from the odd comfort suckle?

Re: BSH baby with a broken leg :(

I am thinking about putting Mama in with her but I again don't like the idea of her going so long without eating. Having said that 1 night in the grand scheme of things is not the be all and end all.

Babes have been pretty much weaned for a week now, Mama is a toy not a food supply now so the other two will be fine. Just a horrible situation!

Thanks for your story with the pup, I've never been at the receiving of a poorly little one before, just praying she does need a pin or anything like that! Most likely just a hairline fracture but the movement in the joint did concern the vet, she did mention a joint fracture (please god no!).

There was me thinking (hoping and praying) the baby bones are flexible!

Re: BSH baby with a broken leg :(

Hurrah! Best news we could have hoped for, only a sprain

Vet said no need to do X-rays as there was an improvement overnight and although there is still a slight limp she is actually trying to put weight on it rather than not using it at all.

Vet says if limp continues on until wed then pop her back in but just caught her pouncing (after having strict instructions to remain put while I made a cuppa!) and there was no limp! I have discovered a new side to her personality, drama queen!

Her new mommy came to visit and is thinking of changing her name to fraud! Very appropriate I would say!

On a side note, anyone who thinks there is profit to be made in breeding should consider situations like these... A £65 vets bill added on to the other ordinary payments such as feed and vaccinations along with the loss of a kitty at 4 days doesn't leave much in the kitty (no pun intended!)
spid, Dally Banjo, buffie and 1 others like this.
