Giving up kittens

Mishka is now booked in for her spay (again) on friday - fingers crossed there will be no more complications. Cant wait till she is ok again - she keeps trying to get out and its so hard keeping her back. She never used to be like this.

The kittens are both doing well, putting weight on nicely eating and pooping ok - as we speak they are using me as a climbing frame. Mishka is such a good mum she cleans them and plays with them.....I cant even think about giving them up - and unless I find a brilliant home for them - someone I know will neuture/spay vaccinate etc I wont let them go. They cry as it is when seperated and sleep together - the bigger one has his paw over the little one...

what must they think (kittens and mums in general) when one day the children/siblings aren't there any more?

How do you guys do it?

Re: Giving up kittens

Most mums are more than sick of their kittens by 12 weeks They soon want them out of the nest

Re: Giving up kittens

same with puppies, mums are usually quite reluctant by 6 weeks and 8 weeks definitely ready to say goodbye! It is also nice on the other hand to see how happy you have made someone by letting them have a precious baby and receiving the updates as they get older.

My kits are both just over 6 weeks old and mum still plays and tends to them.... but I'm sure in a couple more weeks that they will begin to irritate her

Re: Giving up kittens

When I got Lily, I brought her home, and she didn't seem the tiniest bit phased that Mum and littermates were gone! Happy as Larry. As for how she felt when her own kittens left home, unlike a lot of cats she wasn't sick of them at all as far as I could tell, still playing with them and sleeping with them and cleaning them etc. Still, when they left she didn't look for them or seem upset. I think she's just an amazingly laid back cat though :P

Re: Giving up kittens

I cried when 2 of our kittens went to their new home last week (I did start a thread in the cat breeding section I think). I'm use to it now though and Porridge, the mum, seems ok, although the kitten we have kept, Haggis, was upstairs with me the other day and she was walking around looking for him with her calling 'chirp' - back of the telly, under the sofa, behind the sofa, under the table etc. She's better now though, but doesn't really like him being out of her sight. And I think Haggis his missing the rough kitten play with his litter mates - I'm trying to teach him that my elbow is not a good thing to cling onto and bite! What he is enjoying though is still suckling from him Mum without having to compete!!

So yes it's hard to give up kittens, but no more kittens for Porridge - she is booked in with the vet for Monday.
