Studs
Hi guys
I'm intregied into cats since my friend got hers (I'm a dog person) She said that the queen goes to the stud for a few days. Are the cats just put into the same enclosure and left to get on with it or are they seperated and only left together so someone can witness a matting, as I say I'm a dog person and was involved with breeding years ago and ne'er thought about the cat process till my friend was telling me bits lol |

Re: Studs
I breed Siamese cats and have a limited amount of experience, having seen about ten litters delivered, grown up and found new homes.
Most stud owners will want to see the queen's veterinary card and a certificate to show that she has been tested and is clear of FIV etc (the test to be done not more than 24 hours prior to bringing the queen to the stud). From my own experience, I look for a stud owner who is prepared to manage the matings and whom I may contact or who will contact me to let me know how things are progressing. I would take my queen to stud on the second day of her calling, leaving her at the stud owner's in the queen's quarters for around three days. Upon collection of my queen, I would pay the stud fees and keep the stud owner informed. Most stud owners will allow a second go if the first visit was not successful. After the third or fourth week, the queen's teats will become pink and that is a sign that she is pregnant. If, however, she resumes calling a couple of weeks or so later, then she is probably not pregnant and it is possible the queen may need another go. Normally, though, a healthy queen and tom will be successful first time. Usually it is the second day together (I am told) which results in impregnation because during the first day, the queen is settling in and may not allow the tom near her. Good and experienced Tom's though, will be capable of persuading their visiting lady during the honeymoon. I have nearly always found that by the time I collect my girl, she is cuddling her beau and doesn't want to come back home cos life is just too lovely there. A 180 degree turnaround from the first day she arrived. ![]() |

Re: Studs
Its like a little house within a house, to keep the queen separate from the tom whilst the stud owner is unable to be present in case there is a disagreement between the cats upon first arrival. Some queens quarters are below a platform within the stud house and some are next door in a similar little house as the stud house but with a viewing window and a little door between them. Most stud and queens quarters have lighting and heating.

Re: Studs
I guess different people have different routines. I wouldn't leave my queen with anyone who intends just to let the queen into the studs room/enclosure.
I haven't had any queens coming to me to be bred, but I have had a queen in "foster care" and she was brought home for mating (I've also taken studs home to my queens). I place the "foreign" cat in the room next to a room wth the resident cat, between them they have a netted door. That way the cats can see, hear and smell each other but they can't hurt each other. When they seemed at ease with each other the door is opened but I'm present with a blanket in my hands. Ready to throw the blanket over anyone who tries to fight. ![]() If the introduction is successful and the cats are happy with each other I let them live together for 2-3 days. If they breed but aren't really happy with each other they're separated when I can't supervise them. |
