Ignoring one kitten

Well Rosie has been doing a great job with her 5 kittens but she has started to ignore one little kitten.

They are 3 weeks old today and the 4 others are kinda chunky. This one isnt and it is obviously the runt of the litter.

Every day i get the kittens out and give them a clean blanket, place kittens back with mum one at a time. If i put Squeaky in then Rosie totally ignores him and wont let him feed. If i add another kitten and it starts to feed little Squeak is allowed to feed.

I dont have digital scales. This kitten is alert and happy but on the small size its hard to believe he belongs to the same litter.

Do I need to do anything other than observe the kittens and make sure he is getting fed by Rosie?

Re: Ignoring one kitten

im not an expert in this, on my first and last litter of kittens they are now 5week today =) but didnt want to read and run.
my cat paris was doing this with one of hers and i found she was feeding it seperately once the others was fed because it was the weaker one.
i would keep an eye on it and if you think its loosing weight or not gaining any i would maybe try and feed it urself with a milk supplement, cant recomend one but there are some highly experienced breeders on here who im sure could reccomend you the best one for it.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

Thank you, she does feed it but its reluctant and she will only clean his bottom as a last resort.

We have also noticed he doesnt feed for as long as the others which are huge.

i would try and feed the kitten milk supplement alongside then if you are worried but possibly speak to a vet and ask his advice first.
do you help little kitty go or just leave it to mum?
i do hope one of the experienced breeders see this and give u some proper advice on what to do! x

Re: Ignoring one kitten

I leave mum to it. We do handle the kittens every day when mum is eating so they get used to human contact.
Little Squeak is so adorable and if i lay on the floor he will run to greet me and sit next to my head whilst i chat to the kittens.

We called him little squeak because he doesnt meow yet its a little funny squeaky sound. I have always loved cats but there is something special about this little dude. He stole my heart.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

You need to check this little one's weight to make sure that he is getting enough milk. He should be gaining around 10g a day and if he isn't or is actually losing weight he needs a milk supplement, available online or from your vet. If you don't have any scales see if you can borrow some and keep an eye on the weights of all of the kittens.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

You would expect him to be around 400g to be a healthy weight. Rough estimates would be at least 100g at birth + 100g for every week they are old.

They really should have been weighed everyday since birth to monitor progress.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

If you can't get hold of any milk supplement today (KMR, Cimicat, Royal Canin) you could use evap milk - dilute with a little warm water, and try the kit with that. You can get a Sherdlys Lactol Feeding bottle from PaH and use that. Although if you get the Royal Canin milk there is a bottle in there.
Keep us updated.
