Re: Ignoring one kitten

My Nellie was a tiny little cat and gave birth to 2 enormous kittens, and one normal sized one. She certainly favoured the larger ones....I suppose they would be more likely to survive in the wild. In fact she dumped poor little Murphy several times, moving him away from the nest and leaving him on his own ( to die!! ) He survived and grew into a perfectly healthy normal sized cat.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

I was actually advised that for the first few weeks not to be so hands on so rosie wouldnt neglect her kittens. She has been a great mum but also quite fretful at times thats why i didnt handle them very much.

We are going to speak to the vets as soon as other half is back to also see that they say.

The one thing i dont want to do is intervene and actually cause a bonding issue with mum and squeak.

Thank you all for your advice

Re: Ignoring one kitten

If you're worried you need to get weights on all the kittens. Weigh at the same time every day and write all the weights down each time.

If mum will feed the little one, take one or more of the larger ones off and put the little one onto mum. Do this a few times a day but keep an eye on weights. You don't want the larger ones to lose weight either!

I would buy some milk (Cimicat is a good one), and bottle feed if you feel it's needed. 10g weight gain a day is what you're looking to get close to. You won't do any harm topping the little one up anyway. Just go carefully, you don't want any milk near the nose area.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

Well I weighed the kittens.

Daisy 288g
Tipsy 315g
Squeak 292g
Arnie 318g
Buttercup 316g

Spoke to the Vet and he didnt seem concerned said all kittens are Roughly the same weight.

We have been advised to check them every day and if one dramatically falls behind then to give him/her top ups but at the moment its not needed.

Daisys weight shocked me because she is as big as Arnie when you look at her. Weighed them all 3 times just to make sure.

I will also put Daisy and Squeak in Rosies basket without the others a good 3 times a day so they get milk before the greedy ones get in there.

thank you all for your advice.

Re: Ignoring one kitten

I would advise putting a greedy 1 or 2 on the back teats to get the milk flowing and then remove them and put the tinies on. this way they don't have to work so hard to get the milk and get too tired before they have even started good luck with your babies
