Heat Mats

Ok the kittens are now a week old.
Do they still need the heat mat on? If so, how many weeks old should they be before you turn it off?

Re: Heat Mats

I think it's about 3 weeks until they can regulate their own body temperature and need to be kept warm until then.

Re: Heat Mats

I dont use a mat, mom wont stay with them if its too hot, but she has very dense fur. I just leave the heating on instead.

I would leave it another week, they cant regulate their own temperature untill they are around 2 weeks old.

Maybe reduce the temperature gradually rather than completly take it away, they might feel the cold more with being used to the heat mat.

how are they doing?

Re: Heat Mats

Excellent thanks guys!
It’s a heat mat that only warms up when a cat is laying on it – that way it doesn’t get too hot and mum stays laying on it with them.

Yer they are doing great thanks Jen. The little lilac girl is opening her eyes now!!

Im a little worried about 1 of them – not growing as fast as the others and I have tried feeding her replacement milk as well, but she doesn’t seem to take it too well.
She isn’t as strong as the others – but she is gaining about 10g per day so I guess that’s not too bad. Maybe im just worrying for nothing. There is always a runt of the litter, right?

Re: Heat Mats

If shes gaining 10g a day thats fine, i have one a little smaller too. I weighed them yesterday the biggest was 179g and the smallest 139g quite a big difference, there all gaining weight and there suckling fine so iam not worried.

Yes well my largest one is 157g and smallest 117g - so really big difference.
But yes she is suckling well and i always pay close attention to her and make sure she is suckling before i leave the room!
