Re: Starting breeding

I'm ready for the ups and downs as i said before i have been breeding other animals for yeras so know that side of it had the task of hand rearing two foals with is was sad and hard work my family are totally behind me think because i will be home more instead of down a field lol.

I'm glad your being honest about the hard work, commitment etc because its very true and some thing people do have to think hard about.

But looking forward to the good days as lets face it with animals they do out weigh the bad every time

I'm also going to try and show my moggie kitten for fun and experiance think he'll enjoy it too he is that sort of person

Re: Starting breeding

Well done for thinking about all the research etc as it is tempting to just 'jump' in blindly & hope for the best.

There are lots of stories on here of good times , but loads of bad times which ended up being expensive times.

I would say that you really need an emergency fund of £500 - £1000 that you can use for vets, birthing problems, first jabs etc.

This may seem a lot of money but sometimes not having to worry about money helps you deal with the problems you can be faced with a lot easier.

Good luck x

Re: Starting breeding

Breeding cats is extremely expensive. If you want to do it the right way then your initial outlay can add up to a few thousand pounds for quality breeding cats and to providing them with the right environment such as housing, heating, quality food, litter, veterinary expenses. etc.

Add more money on top if you intend to prove the quality of what you produce by exhibiting them, anything from £50-100 per show for a cat. Also and probably the most important thing to bear in mind is that you will have to give up most if not all of your free time, holidays, social life. etc.

Breeding cats is a lifetime commitment which will involve sheer hard work, loss of personal life and a chronically deficient bank balance..........anything else will be a bonus.

Re: Starting breeding

I am new to breeding and at present have 1 queen and 1 stud, plus am looking for another queen. I will say that without my mentor and friends who are breeders (Many of 20+ years) I would not have had a clue. Cat shows and showing your chosen breed are definately a good place to start, not only will you learn about breed standards etc but you will also make some valuble friendships which will aid you in your dreams
We did all start somewhere and even though I am a year in now and have spent I wouldn't like to say how much, it has definately been a worth while journey and I am very excited about what next year will be bringing when I start showing my boy and girl.
A good book I have enjoyed reading which a breeder friend recomended to me was the Complete Book of Cat Breeding by Damien Rice. I also own about 7 books on Persians (My chosen breed as I am totally inlove with them and also have 2 pet neutured girls) which although there is alot of advice that is repeated there is also alot of tit bits that I wouldn't know or have thought of. Cat clubs are also a great source of information and best of all forums!!! Forums are great as there are always people who can help you and answer your questions
Sorry i've gone on, I wish you all the luck in the world, Mel xx

Re: Starting breeding

Widget dog - a mentor is defo the way to go. My mentor has also bcome my friend!
Read lots & soak up as much information in books and on the net as you can. I have also learnt so much on this forum too and there are some very experienced and knowledgable breeders on here who are happy to help.
Heck they have even sat with people through their cat pregnancies and posted on the thread like they are sat with them!!

You are bound to get bad comments - im afraid thats part of it as not everyone will agree with the way you would do things as we all have different ideas. You will also come across rude and snooty people - but be brave and strong and you will be fine!
