Contraceptive help

I've heard that Ovarid comes with problems, and shouldn't be used on a maiden queen. It can also knock off calling for up to a year.

I've also heard that Piriton can be used to take the 'edge' off of a call.

Can someone explain about contraceptives please?

Re: Contraceptive help

I used to use Ovarid a lot, with never any problems, then a couple of years ago one of my young cats who had only ever had one dose of it ended up with a pyo. I can't remember how old she was but certainly far too young to be mated. It was something like six months after that before she called again. I haven't used it a lot since. It could be co-incidence of course. The important thing is that the stated dose is far too high, start with 1/4 tablet every three weeks.

Piriton will shut them up overnight, that's all.

Re: Contraceptive help

The other possibility is Delvasteron. I used it once, after several conversations with our vet, on one of my girls who was calling constantly (every 12-14 days!). She stopped calling for 5 months which was great and worked out well. I let her call once and then on her second call after that took her to stud. She was fine and had no problems with it.

I would discuss the options with your vet and get their take on things.

Re: Contraceptive help

I have been told to never use Ovarid on a maiden queen but have used it successfully for 5 months on my bsh queen last year with no health problems . The main issue I had was that her personality completely changes whilst she has it...she is not keen to have much human attention and absolutely hates the other cats (including her daughter). However, she calls every 3 weeks for a week to 10 days, and it does take its toll on their health and condition when they continuously call so in the end I had to make the decision to use it.

It's not a perfect solution but I would use it again and as before closely watch for signs of any problems. If there is a know problem with pyometra in the line then I would personally not take the risk.

Also, I once missed a dose by 3 days with my girl (I give 1/4 of a tab every 3 weeks) and she started to call strongly again.

Re: Contraceptive help

My girl isn't a maiden queen which is good.

She was a heavy caller before she was mated and has already had 3 calls since she gave birth (kittens are 10 weeks). This one has gone for 5 days now.

I'll see the vet but i know i might have to do something.

Thanks for the advice guys
