Shocking rise in cat attacks and abandonments in 2010
Shocking rise in cat attacks and abandonments in 2010 - News story - Media - rspca.org.uk
I place this in the breeding section, because so many think it is OK to breed at the moment. Anyone who is naive enough to think that their kittens will not end up in such situations needs made aware, whether they are at the pedigree end of the market or at the moggie end.

I didn't just want to read this and not reply.......
sadly I can't think what to say though.... except.... neuter neuter neuter (and hopefully that silly woman in the cat chat section with her "well I wouldn't neuter a pregnant stray" will read it too) |

I could open it, but after reading a few sentences, I couldn't read it any further as it was too upsetting
![]() Thank you Lauren001 for posting the article. I hope it has the desired effect re: neutering. |

Re: Shocking rise in cat attacks and abandonments in 2010
There are two different things here. Why the rise in attacks on cats? Presumably because there are more sick thugs around, or because gardeners are taking matters into their own hands. I suspect the former - we could argue all day about why young thugs are getting more common and it's not an issue for the breeding section.
Abandonment of course is another matter. I suspect the root of the problem here is people being forced into rented accommodation, where the norm is that pets are not allowed. This is increasing and is only going to increase more as houses are now simply not affordable for most unless Mummy and Daddy can help out. Add this to the normal turnover of people giving up their pets because they have lost their job, or started a new job, or are having a baby, and it's bound to tip things over the edge as far as rescue space is concerned. If people get desperate enough and can't find homes for their animals, they will dump them. And then you get the idiots who are desperate for a bit of extra money and think that breeding the cat is the way to get some. I guess only experience will persuade most of those. As long as they see moggies advertised for £100 each at 7 or 8 weeks, how is anyone going to persuade them that they won't make monbey on a litter? Liz |

?I think at the root of the increase in abandoned cats is......... the global recession, the economic turndown or whatever you want to call it. Even in countries where living in (private landlord) rented acocmodation isn't the norm, the stats for abandoned cats are higher than they have been. When people's pockets start to pinch... cats (and I dare say dogs too) are the first to suffer. |
