I think at the root of the increase in abandoned cats is......... the global recession, the economic turndown or whatever you want to call it. Even in countries where living in (private landlord) rented acocmodation isn't the norm, the stats for abandoned cats are higher than they have been. When people's pockets start to pinch... cats (and I dare say dogs too) are the first to suffer.
also have to agree with the landlord/renting issue as alot of people losing homes with much loved pets that they dont want to give up but are literally forced to, i wish more landlords would accept pets.

There are just so many cats around, it's also an easy come easy go situation. While they (like dogs) are so plentiful and overbred, there value on all levels will remain very low among many (not all) owners unfortunately ...

My heart goes out to those involved in cat rescue, you are all heroes, it's got no better really. For individual cats yes, the majority

We have two issues here, in this thread:-

1] too many cats have been bred, thus the need for neutering. I assume
that all the "breeders" on this forum will have their cats neutered as
well; that way, the over population problem will be dealt with ?!?
Lead by example !!!

2] the reason why private landlords ban pets is because the large
percentage of renters have no respect for the properties they rent.
More often than not, there are damage issues when renters leave.
Some just moonlight and leave no forwarding address as they know that
the damage they have done will cost a lot more than the deposit taken
originally.... Do I need to go on? Renters who don't look after their pets
and allow them to urinate on the floor do not appreciate how difficult it
is to get the smell out of floor joists or screeding. So thus the attitude
of landlords. 40 years in the industry has seen these issues occur time
and time again. Show me am honest responsible renter and I will show
you a politician who doesn't lie !!!!!!!!
