An idea for a sticky - perhaps

Hiya breeding peeps! You know better than anyone else that a lot of folk approach the topic of breeding with a large degree of romanticism and naivety, and certainly will not traipse into a library or online to make themselves knowledgeable about what they are getting themselves into.

I was therefore wondering whether it would make sense for someone to write a short sumthin sumthin on breeding that should become a sticky - i.e. the considerations, risks, financial outlays etc etc that we could just refer posters to in the first instance when they crop up?

What do you think? Yay or nay?

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

Hmm, no, I was thinking more of the type of people who would quite like their cat to have one litter because, ach I don't know, kittens are cute without thinking through or knowing about the ins and outs. Dangers of "accidental" matings, pregnancy and potential pitfalls, kittening equipment and things, what can go wrong, how much does it all cost etc etc.

I know the info is already in quite some posts. For example, Aurelia pulled the financial side together if I remember rightly but it might be a bit of an eye opener and hopefully deterrent to the romantics/naive ones on here!

But perhaps that is an impossible or even unwanted ask.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

right i get ya now! i think she wrote something like that on the neutering thread

you could name the thread 'so you want your cat to have 1 litter?' or soemthing

mind you you still have to put down the costs of heath testing before breeding though!

Ermm, yeah but I don't know anything about breeding hun so I wouldn't be writing that thread. I was hoping some of you knowledgeable and esteemed pf fellow members who are breeders or who know about breeding would volunteer

But as I keep saying, this is just an idea. Not sure whether it has any merit...

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

Excellent idea ,There is so much information out there that needs to be available for the people who think it would be a good idea to have one litter ,but are not aware of the implications and cost if/when it goes wrong.

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

I've thought about doing this many times. Trouble is we all do things a bit differently, so I think what would probably be best is if we pool together our thoughts. If one person does it, it will only be how that person does it ... which isn't necessarily correct or the norm iyswim?

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

Good point but there will be 'basics' we will all agree on i'm sure.

Before you breed........

I think key areas would be;

* finances (both savings and ongoing)
* reasons to breed
* time and energy it takes (not all fluff etc)
* doing things properly (GCCF), vaccs, contracts etc.
* obtaining suitable animals (not just mating any 2 cats)

too tired lol, i'll add tomorrow...
