Before you breed........

I think key areas would be;

* finances (both savings and ongoing)
* reasons to breed
* time and energy it takes (not all fluff etc)
* doing things properly (GCCF), vaccs, contracts etc.
* obtaining suitable animals (not just mating any 2 cats)

too tired lol, i'll add tomorrow...
You'd think so wouldn't you? But the truth is some don't even bother with the basics that many of think are essentials. I'm not talking about new breeders either.

It might be a better idea to do a thread which gives a blow by blow account of mating a queen and raising a litter ... Pro's and cons, giving an idea of what can happen if it goes to plan and of course what can happen if it all goes very wrong. In amongst that you can give more detailed info like costs and what not.

I think even take it back further, to 'choosing suitable animals to breed', making sure they are registered, tested appropriately, right age etc. Also reasons why NOT to mate animals not on the active etc...

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

A bit negative I know, sorry ...

But to be honest, I doubt it will have much influence on the people who want "just one litter" or to have a litter so their kiddies can have kittens to play with for a little while

But worth a try *sigh*

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

yup i agree with you there!

it won't stop people, but at least they will be better informed, and for people wanting to breed for the right reasons, it will help them make the right choices from day 1

Couldn't say it better myself.

Re: An idea for a sticky - perhaps

If someone could include tips for responsible moggy breeding that would be good. I don't want to do it myself but I had problems getting hold of moggy kittens - I could have bought hundreds of pedigree and crosses but I wanted a moggy. No good simply directing people to rescues as their criteria often do not allow some people to adopt. Perhaps include research on moggy kitten availability in your area.
