One for the breeders - how is the recession affecting you?

Just wondered how everyone was doing and whether you have changed your plans for the year with the recession ongoing?

Re: One for the breeders - how is the recession affecting you?

I had no trouble selling any of my kittens that were born in October. First one leaves today I had a lot of enquiries for them and could have sold more. My Husband thinks it's because they are too cheap but at £350, non active, not able to be shown (Siamese with Silver Oriental in pedigree) I think the price I am asking is reasonable.
I've seen byb ones selling for almost as much though

Hiya Lynn seems reasonable price to me - not cheap but as you say the problem with BYBs is they charge high prices for what they offer!

When I was looking for a Ori Longhair they were similar price from reputable breeders and I know other Siamese breeders who charge the same?

Re: One for the breeders - how is the recession affecting you?

Hi Soupie I was very worried as I have a litter of 5 just now, then all of a sudden inquiries started coming in, I had one on my waiting list and someone who has bought one before is taking another and the others are provisionally booked!!

I am now referring people onto other breeders. I hope it continues.

Luckily 2 of my 3 were reserved before they were born. The other was reserved within 2 weeks.

There aren't loads of breeders in my area which i suppose does help

Re: One for the breeders - how is the recession affecting you?

I am getting 4/5 enquiries a day at the moment about my current litter even though they are all reserved. I'm not keeping a waiting list as it creates too much stress for me and gives the potential owner a false guarantee of a kitten, which isn't the case. What I do, is say that I will contact them if and when I may have a suitable kitten, all I ask is if they find a kitten elsewhere, they let me know.

I made the mistake of letting two kittens go as singles to people who contacted me early last year but then after they were actually born, I got quite a few people contact me who were looking for two kittens (I prefer them to go in pairs as it's better for the kittens).

I am running on two kittens at the moment but have lovely people waiting to be their new mum and dad's if I decide not to keep one for myself.

Siamese sell for between £350 and £450 depending on location really.
