how old should kittens be to have mum spayed

Hi all just woundering if anyone could help me? My cat has had a litter of 3 kittens sadly 1 died as there where complications. But now i want to get my cat spayed as i dont want her to have another litter,But i'm not sure how old the kittens need to be before i can take her to be done, as they are still getting milk from her. The kittens are 6 weeks old and have fleas, is there any products for kittens as i can only find any for kittens over 12 weeks old.
thanks babysaga!!!

Sorry for the baby that didn't make it .
You are right to think of de fleaing the kittens, if they get to be to many, they can have a much worse effect on little kittens than on bigger cats. For this age you might need to treat the environment rather than the kittens though, I wouldn't put any chemicals on them yet myself, but that's just my opinion.

You can get excellent products from your vet for the bedding and carpet [keep them all out whilst you treat it] and then rewash all the bedding to remove any nasty chemical residue.

For the kittens, I would flea comb them and get them out that way. It will take you a little while, but will be very worth it.

Don't forget to worm them [ask your vet about panacur for them] as fleas can carry worm eggs.

Re: how old should kittens be to have mum spayed

I think as long as the cat is healthy after having her kittens and has put weight back on, she can be done now. I know vets here will do them 6 weeks post birth. How did such young kittens get fleas ? I guess their mam has been going out, in which case be careful she's not pregnant again, sadly people just don't realise that this can & does happen.
Frontline is the safest thing to use and is fine for very young kittens. Also your vet will be happy to de-flea them for you if you need help

Re: how old should kittens be to have mum spayed

Many/most vets will not spey mum until her milk is dry, but so long as the kittens are eating solids properly, all you would need to do is seperate the kittens from mum for a week and her milk will dry up.
I did this when my kittens were 7 weeks old, so mum was speyed when they were 8 weeks old. I used a dog crate to put the kittens in, so mum could see them but they couldn't feed from her.

Re: how old should kittens be to have mum spayed

My Mumma cat was spayed when the kittens were 7 weeks old and eating solids etc. I felt the Kittens were healthy and well on the solids and so it was ok. My Vet spayed Mum even though she still had a small amount of milk no problem.

Hope you get the fleas sorted and as mentioned above maybe keep mum in as she certainly can and will get pregnant again.

Yeah some vets will do it when they still have milk, but it puts them at risk to some sort of infection (can't remember the name). I don't know how high the risk is, but I think its something to do with the milk going back inside. Some vets just wont chance it.
