Question about breeding from a pedigree pet.

Hi all,
if you buy a cat from a breeder to be kept as a pet, and not on the active register, is there some form of contract or something so that the breeder knows this has been adhered to and the cat spayed?

I ask this simply as I have met somebody recently who bought a bengal as a pet, and has not had her spayed, and has let her mate with her moggie. Twice. So she has been selling/giving away (not sure which) bengal cross kittens, which quite obviously, she shouldn't be doing.

Are all breeders different? Some have contracts and some don't?

Re: Question about breeding from a pedigree pet.

I think most breeders have contracts but I don't know how enforcable they are under the law. Some breeders withold the registration (pink slip) until receiving a vet's letter saying that the kitten has been neutered but if the new owners are so intent on breeding they won't bother about that.
The only sure way of stopping it is by having the kittens neutered before they leave for their new homes.

Re: Question about breeding from a pedigree pet.

I agree with Lynne, as a breeder you have to be realistic, you can have a breeding or pet contract and do your best to prevent un-authorised breeding.

However if someone is willing to breed, without the possibility of registering the kittens, or breeds in this case with domestic moggies there really is not much you can do, some breeders would say I would go and take the cat back.

But being realistic you probably would never find out unless, you knew the person or lived next to them.

But there is not much more you can do other than try your best to discourage this behaviour by having a contract and hopefully the majority of your chosen owners will abide by it, or as lynne has mentioned neuter before leaving, but again early neutering is another debate.

Re: Question about breeding from a pedigree pet.

I have to have the proof of neutering sent to me by 6 months, I keep in contact with everyone, I have only had 1 person say 'I dont care take me to court' So We got papers drawn up and sent to her. I may add with this certain case that the kitten was very small and she wanted to let it out side to mate to 'make a bit of money'

I had a very strong feeling that something was wrong when the day before they come to by the kitten, They called and reassured me that they were great owners, so I burried my 'feeling' I have seen Never gone back on my 'feeling' As if I had listened to it in the first place the kittens would never have to gone a abusive home where it was sadly hit so much that it started to act aggressily.

Once the kitten was spayed they 'dont want it got to get rid of it' and sold it, I am in contact with the new owners who are great they worked with her and she no longer is agressive or cowers if a hand is raised, she is a real lap cat

If someone is interested in breeding I want them to be upfront and talk to me about it, If im happy and I have a great quality boy/girl for breeding then we can talk about it. Pets are pets for a reason. I find it very sad, but maybe the breeder never soild her with a contract? or she isnt a full pedigree or the breeders cats werent regged either, who did she buy her from?
