Pets (usually pedigree dogs) stolen from gardens and people's houses... and the instance of the kitten I mentioned above, although rare, isn't a solitary case.
I keep a few 'pure bred' chickens (just for eggs, we don't breed them) and, as unbelievable as it may sound, the theft of pure bred poultry from enthusiasts premises is a huge problem countrywide.. most often the thefts happening when a member on an internet forum has openly discussed, in general conversation, what shows they're attending and thus away from home all day.
I don't get hung up on it and it's usually the furthest thing from my mind when I'm dealing with kitten enquiries and people visiting... but I don't think it hurts to be a bit mindful.

You have raised a very key point I had not thought of before - a reason not to confirm what cat shows I will be attending in advance.
I also worry about all this as a woman. Maybe I am being over cautious but I would NEVER be in an enclosed space with a man I wasn't familiar with (such as a friend or family). Cats are one issue (anyone remember the poor lady who lost all her Norwegian Forest Cats after giving someone the grand tour of her cat run?) as is being mugged for kittens/kitten sale money. But the stereotype of single women & cats is something that has made me think about MY security too. Hubby used to think I was crazy when I asked him to make sure he was with me at all times when selling things that needed collecting on eBay or when people viewed my old rented house.
I've seen quite a few addresses posted on breeder websites that concern me. I may start emailing those that I have seen to suggest removing it. I also don't like that my website appears in show catalogues.
