Getting a second kitten

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn't the correct part of the forum to post in but I wanted to get advice specifically from experienced breeders.

I have a golden persian as a pet which is my first, and he is 6 months old. We really want to get a second persian not only because we love them but also because we want our current baby to have a play mate and companion, particularly when we are at work during the day. He will be neutered before the second one arrives, and the second one will also be.

I want to make sure we make it as easy as possible for the two cats to gel together because we love our current baby so much we would hate for him to not be happy with the change! So my questions are:

1. Would another boy gel more easily or would a girl be preferabe? Presumably territorial issues etc wouldn't be an issue between two boys if they were neutered but I'd love your advice.

2. We have a kitten in mind - another boy from a very reputable and helpful breeder, however he is an only kitten as his little brother didn't survive following the birth. Is it common for only kittens to have more trouble mingling with another cat than if they have been brought up with their brothers and sisters in the early stages?

Thanks, and again I hope you don't mind me posting here.

Many thanks x

Hiya.

I also have a male persian. I would never consider getting another

I personally don't think it matters whether you go for a male or a female, the problems come when someone has an un-speyed female and has more than one male that isn't neutered.

The choice is yours. Have your current one neutered just now, mine was done at around 5 months old.

I don't think it will matter too much about him being a single kitten. He will still have had interaction with his mother, and any other cats the breeder has in the same area.

All cats take time to get to know one another, don't expect them to be friends straight away. Take your time with introductions and i'm sure all will be well.

Also remember that not all cats become friends. I have 3 (soon to be 4) cats and they 'tolerate' each other, rather than being best of pals.

What colour is the wee one you have your eye on?

All the best with your chioce!!

Re: Getting a second kitten

Thanks for your reply!

I have my eye on another golden, originally I was after a chinchilla but I just the love the colour of my current golden.

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you consider getting another persian?

Re: Getting a second kitten

Persians are lovely natured cats BUT they do have 'things' that annoy me;

* They tend to sneeze often and you end up having little brown dots all over the floors, wall etc. I hate when mine sneezes on my face when i'm asleep. Mine isn't one of the ones with the very squashed face either.

* They have sensitive guts, any small change of diet can set of the diahorrea. This is a NIGHTMARE!! It sticks all over the fur on their hind legs, bum and tail, and if you're unlucky enough to have been out, you will return home to a house covered in pooprints and skid marks
Takes quite a bit of cleaning, the smell lingers and they need a bath!!

* They require at least a weekly grooming or they become rather matted, this then needs clipping off which isn't much fun. They also leave bits of hair all over your house.

* They are prone to 'toileting' problems, such as urinary tract infections, cystitis which leads to urinating in places other than the litter tray.

* They are sensitive souls who dislike changes. Moving house, getting a new pet, having a baby etc etc can all cause problems.

All this said, my boy is an angel. He has had every one of the above but i wouldn't ever let him go, just wouldn't get another. I'm sure there are breeders and persian loves who would slate me to the ends of the earth but that's just my opinions and my experiences of it.

Re: Getting a second kitten

Ahhh he is a cutey!!

Yes that sounds like a pretty good case for not getting another, hehe. Maybe I've been lucky during my Prince's three months with us since he was a baby but he hasn't had any of those issues so far. I think we've got around the 'poo problem' due to feeding him Royal Canin biscuits and chicken chunks only, but we have been advised to introduce wet food by someone with a lot more experience so maybe that will be when the fun begins!

Re: Getting a second kitten

Aww thanks!

Do you have any photos of your baby? The golden persians are gorgeous!!

Royal Canin biscuits is a great choice, and that's what i feed. I feed all of mine the kitten biscuits and they love them!!

Wet foods must be introduced very slowly, that's possibly the mistake i've made in the past, being too quick for him!!

I'd also like to add that my boy LOVES raw chicken wings, i feed 1-2 per week and he eats the lot! Good for him and helps to keep his teeth clean. Takes them a wee while to get used to them but a definate hit.

Persians are extremely cute when they are babies, i remember when i brought mine home at 3 months. Little ball of fluff. Is it the same breeder you are thinking about buying from again?

Re: Getting a second kitten

We were informed that Persians can have a problem if they don't have wet food in their diets due to problems resulting from constipation ater too much dry food (so, the opposite issue to yours!)

Here is our boy (terrible pic I know but I just snapped him while he was still on my phone!)

Re: Getting a second kitten

Awwww MatildaG he's GORGEOUS

We have two male ragdoll boys who were litter brothers and they get on fine. Our third ragdoll Leia (female) will be joining us this month.

I know of cat owners who have had a male/female cats and got one of the same or opposite sex and not had problems but I guess theres no simple rule for success.
How they get on may have a lot to do with how they're introduced etc.

We've never had any problems having two boys, but i'm sure some people with more experience of having persians and getting same/different sex second cats, will be able to offer better advice based on their experience.

Re: Getting a second kitten

Awwww he looks like a little stunner!! What a pretty colour

A persian only fed on dry food can develop urinary tract infections, and cystitis. Mine has had a few, they require a trip to the vet for antibiotic & anti-inflammatory injections which cost around £50 a time.

I definetely recommend feeding at least some wet food, actually best on wet only.

There's tons of really good wet foods available at reasonable prices. Zooplus is fantastic!!
