A cat that you found on the street will very likely belong to someone else; how would you feel if someone 'stole' your cat?
I would make up flyers and put them through the doors around you, and a steet or 2 away. You could also contact your local animal shelter.
Does the cat have a collar? If so he/she will belong to someone.
I really don't agree with people 'taking in' other people's animals and i would be furious if anyone ever took a cat of mine into their home.
The only reason to 'take in' a cat would be if it was obviously hurt or very skinn and needing vet attention.
