One week to blast off

Well we have 7 days to go and im sure we cant get any bigger , she is massive and can hardly move , cant jump up on any of the units and just waddles when she walks .
Im also ver tired because last night i was up all night with her , she was very restless all evening and going from one basket to the next every 5 minutes , then coming around rubbing against us all the time purring very loudly , her milk has come in checked her nipples and can get milk out of them so was thinking OMG she's starting but about 1.30 am she decided enough was enough and was time to go to sleep , fantastic for her lol but i was on pins and just could not sleep after that . This morning she was shouting for her food as usual and ate a full bowl of chicken and now she is just splattered like a pancake on the couch lol .

David, would it be possible for you to post some sort of tips list for coping with such huge litters? Did all 12 and the queen make it from that other large litter?

I'd be very interested to hear how you coped with such a huge litter and it would be an enormous help to anyone who might end up in the same situation. Heck my girl had 4 in her first litter, I'm not sure I can even imagine 6, let alone 12

Well firstly it was a total shock i didnt think she was going to stop lol out of the 12 of them 10 of them survived , the two that died were very very tiny and only lasted a few hours . The others were given top up feeds to help mum , i dont know how i coped really i think i just went into automatic pilot mode , made sure everything was kept spotless changed her bedding 4 times a day , make sure everything is always kept completely clean and any bottles and stuff always serilised and made sure she had as much food as she wanted to eat .

For this coming litter i have got everything already set out near the kittening box just incase i need to step in .

Plastic box with newspaper and vet bed in the bottom and heat pad so kittens can be placed in there if need be whilst the rest of the kittens are arriving .
Towels
scissors
surgical clamps
cotton wool pads
iodine
feeding bottles
sterilising fluid and unit
Antibacterial hand cleanser
milk formula
Collate nutri drops
digital scales
notepad & pen
And me on the couch wrapped in a duvet for the forseeable future lol .

Re: One week to blast of

David, not sure if you missed it off, but Dopram drops would also be a god send for a large litter.

My mentor swears by it, and it has on occasion brought (what a appear to be) still born kittens back to life!

I meant tips, for feeding and what not. With so many kittens I would imagine you would have to have a system? Did you have any extra help?

Re: One week to blast of

Never used the dopram drops before but will look into them .

Basically you need to make sure you have more than enough feeding bottles , that way you always have some sterilised ready for the next feed whilst your washing and sterilising the others if you get what i mean .
Formula i always had made up in sealed containers in the fridge , made up enough every day to last me the next 24 hours and put it in a bottle warmer when needed to get it to the right temperature .
All kittens were being fed by mum and were just being topped up my me so i did this every 4 hours and just gave them as much as they would take , the larger ones that were getting to mums teats more didnt take that much but the smaler ones did take more , i tried taking the larger ones away for a while so the smaller ones could feed on their own from her but she was having non of that and just kept getting up to put them back with her so i thought it just best to carry on the way i was .
I didnt have any help and did it all on my own , it was very tiring but worth it .
After 3 weeks i started to wean them onto a pate type kitten food watered down into a mush with warm boiled water so it was easy for them to eat and they really blossomed from then on .
