Heat mats

Sorry for all the posts but i want to be prepared!!

What heat pads to you all recommend and where do you buy them?

I've seen Snugglesafe but it doesn't look very big to me.

Theres loads on Ebay, the same kind: Cat dog bed pet puppy electric heat pad heater mat SAFE on eBay (end time 01-Nov-10 20:03:56 GMT)

Does that look ok?

Any alternative suggestions?

Re: Heat mats

Hot water bottle here too I do have a few of those microwaveable 'bean bag' things that stay warm for a long time and come in handy. Regardless though, I only ever use heat for newborn kittens where the queen is attending to the next to be born, for instance.

I personally wouldn't ever use a heated pad in the kitten box for BSH's - queens absolutely hate being overheated (even when it's not my idea of too warm for them!).

Re: Heat mats

Alison D, that one is very similar to the one I have. I REALLY like it. Snuggle safes … like you say they are not that big…. And with water bottles and snuggle safe or any of those filled microwavable cushion things… they never maintain a constant temperature, they can be too warm, then they become too cool. A heat pad does maintain a constant temperature, and that to me is its biggest advantage. However, I am not sure you actually need one? I mean your kittens are only going to be bottle fed for a day, and they will still be with mum, right? I use them a lot, mainly with orphaned kittens though. I have used them with queens and kittens and they do definitely get used…. just as lot less.

The only real advise I have is... many of these things have an automatic swtich off (tho the one you posted doesn't seem to have that, which is good). A heat pad that automatically switches off after 2 hours is worse than useless. Fine if you're using it to get warm feet in bed, useless for kittens though. This one (I think) like mine... the first part of the cable is bite-proof. You can buy a roll of cable-protector for under 2 quid at the ikea and that protects the whole length of the cable.
