Coat colours

Hello,

whilst on the subject of genetic testing, i saw "coat colour" tests and am wondering if they would be useful?

How can you tell if your cat carries dilute, chocolate or cinammon without these tests. Is it if there is history of them in the pedigree?

Are these tests necessary for someone like me who has the pedigree?

Re: Coat colours

Well we managed without them for years and had the fun of finding out what our cats carried. They're there if you want them and can be useful but I wouldn't call them necessary. I would maybe have considered testing a boy who is going to be available to outside queens but as it's normal to have a boy prove himself first you tend to have found out anyway.

if its in the ped its a bit pointless, i used it on a bengal as we thought she may carry blue but she didnt.

Re: Coat colours

I am awaiting the coat colour tests to come back on Willow..quite excited as she may carry cinnamon/fawn like her mum. As she has very good type, these are colours I may consider trying to breed in the future.

The test is also sometimes useful to see if colourpoint is carried as the gene for this can be carried over many generations without showing up unless the cat is mated to another carrier. Obviously the need to test for this depends on how well you know the lines you are breeding from.

I test PKD as well as Coat colours and Blood Group if needed.

Good luck with your kittens...it is so exciting and baby brits are just too cute!

Re: Coat colours

The line concerned does not carry any colourpoint, that's what i wanted

Blood group has been tested (bit of a situation, i have another thread about that)

I am considering PKD testing but i already know the father of my litter is negative.

I'm really excited and can't wait to meet my fluffs
