Hi Carlyjb,
So you decided to become a breeder, You have a lot to learn and so little time, Your cat will be only pregnant approx 63-64days is the average.
So where do we begin, firstly hi am Gary I am a breeder, I breed Siamese, Serengeti and Bengals you can have a look on my album there are pics of my show cats and some of my previous litters, I run a cattery and professional grooming and microchipping company.
What kind of cats are yours? Your cats mating is perfectly normal, the males penis is barbed so penetration is extremely painful for the female, hence why there is a loud howl in the final stages, there is no relation between how many times they mate and how many kittens she will have, most breeders will allow the breeding process to happen a few times to make sure that it has been successful, but again this number will differ considerably, if you research on the internet their are many articles written by breeders all with conflicting numbers some saying three some saying eight as the average, some saying they leave them together for two whole days after first mating, the only true answer is you must decide for yourself, and your female, you must however make sure she can not get out as it is possible for her to get pregnant to more than one male. What you must do though is note the date of the first mating so you can aproxiamately work out a due date.
You will have so many questions over the next few days and weeks and I will try to answer them, So tell me a little about you and your cats, how long have you had them, what breed are they, are they registered gccf or tica.Have you showed your cats, when did you decide you wanted to breed, what do you hope to achieve i.e are you breeding them because you want a couple of more kittens or are you breeding with a purpose i.e some breeders want to produce kittens/cats as close to the breed standard as they can, some to enhance a certain colour or marking. This is important to establish what you wish to gain from breeding as it will affect future purchases to strengthen your breeding line.
You will come across some negativity on the forum, most breeders are very passionate about their hobby/profession and take offence that you have not learned all you can before embarking on breeding, you also have pet owners who might be passionate about rescue centres etc. Dont worry you have asked and acknowledged that you dont know, which means you want to learn and understand, and that is what breeders do , we try to learn all we can, from others, from a visit to our vet, from experience, from books , from internet but like I said there are many different ideas and conflicting information. So all you can do is ask and you will get answers, some will be standard answers, but you will get some which have a difference of opinion. i.e what food is best, and again you have to decide what is right for you and your queen, well bye for now
