Are there any signs which indicate your cat is about to go in to labour?

Hi all,

The vet has told us that our cat could give birth from anything from 1 to 3 weeks from now. Are there any signs to look out for so that we know she may be about to have her kittens?

I have just put together a birthing box for her and she got straight in it for a snooze!

Thank you in advance!!!

You may find her appetite increases rapidly in the next few weeks and she may start going in and out her birthing box a lot more and making it comfortable.

I noticed with Nancy that she got very affectionate the week before the birth, wouldn't leave me alone. She also slept an awful lot and you will see the kittens making obvious movements about a week before birth. You may also notice colostrum leaking from her nipples aswell.

Whats her behaviour like at the moment?

She might also get very restless keep moving around alot,it will look like she cant get comfortable, prior to labour it is also common for cats to eat alot, then suddenly leave their food.So dont be to alarmed if she refuses her food.Good luck hope all goes well, fingers crossed for you

Thanks guys, it is so hard with her because a lot of the behaviour you read about she does all time anyway.

For example she is forever...

*Kneeding her bedding / the carpet / us / our bedding and marching up and down
*Purring loudly - all the time!
*Following us around
*She already has a few favourite quiet spots she seeks out

You can see the kittens moving a bit (I don't really know how much is a lot), her appetite has increased, she is sleeping more and constantly licking her bits.

I hope whenever it is we are home!!!

The first sign is that her shape will change - the kittens drop, she looks smaller when viewed from above but that is just because the kittens are being carried lower down. Happens a day or two before birth. The second sign, which means they are imminent, is that she starts urgently looking for somewhere to have them.
