Question Budgie feather picking

Our budgie is feather picking a lot lately.
She has picked out feathers on purpose. (I have seen blood at the end of one.)
She can loose a lot of feathers in a day.

I have been spraying her with Plume spray. I have even been treating her fr mites... nothings working.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Budgie feather picking

Is she a single bird? Most birds pull their feathers when they are bored. Is is possible to get her a mate? If not just make sure she has lots of stimulation like toys, plenty of out of cage exercise etc. Is she tame? Try to spend time with her everyday to stop her getting lonely xx

She is by herself. She has got quite a few toys. She can't come out because of our cat.
Everytime someone puts their hand in her cage, she'll pick at them. She's very rarely aggressive towards us.

Re: Budgie feather picking

she really needs to be let out every day for a wing stretch. Can you not take her to a room and lock the cat out for 20mins or so just so she can have a fly around. My cockatiel is a right grumps if she hasnt been out of her cage. Your bird really needs this stimulation or she is going to continue pulling her feathers out!x

As said before, she needs to be let out. Birds are very social animals. Also try rotating her toys every week or two, as these will keep her more interested in them too.

Re: Budgie feather picking

I have 4 budgies and one of them has been feather picking for 2 years. I have tried everything but nothing works. I let them out all the time. They sit on a perch on top of an open cage and are free to fly in their room. I think that she may have developed it as a habit now because she has been doing it for so long. She has bald spots on her chest and her wings. It really baffled and upset me when I see her doing it but I know that she will never stop now. She is 7 yrs old.

Sometimes a bird will pluck if she wants to breed? I have a kakariki that plucks herself every year when it's breeding season, as the winter months draw in all she lets them grow again.

My budgies feathers have never grown back. She has picked them out so many times. She had such a lovely plumage before she did it! Its such a shame.
