splayed legs

Hello everyone, just wondering if anyone here has a bird suffering with splayed legs?

I have a budgie with splayed legs, the great thing is she has not let it get her down and does everything the other two do which is great to see, shes a right little character and although she has had a few scrapes with getting the claws stuck on bars shes always quick to recover.

The basis of this thread was to see what other peoples experiences of this ailment have been, so any volunteers?

Re: splayed legs

From what ive read its a genetic 'mutation' from birth yes, apparently if you catch it early you can actually help them grow straight by putting, basically a pot on the effected toes, but as i got lemon from a pet shop i was already too late for this.

which pet shop is it that you work at? i may be able to pop in and 'take a look' but by the sounds of it it is splayed legs yes, would a photo be possible?

well he was born with it, quite an old guy now (his name is wonky) he was also attacked by a cat last year which didnt help (he was down the owners house and they had a new rescue cat and she got to the cage.

its at killay pet shop in swansea, will try get a picture of him tomorrow when im in work.

he has no problems with getting around and is a bit of a ladies man lol but was just curious as to wether it was splayed legs as it sounded like it.

Re: splayed legs

splayed legs are usualy caused by lack of support in the nest, for example with canaries its usualy caused by the nest cup being too wide, and in budgies its usualy cuased by a lack of nest material and lack of siblings to lean againt so the legs slide out to the sides and the chick grows up with splayed legs.
it can be cured at a young age by putting a closed ring on both feet and tying them together at a normal bredth for a couple of weeks.
