Cockatiels and finches dying

Hi. A number of my birds have died recently – can anyone help me? I have lost several cockatiels and zebra finches in the last 10 days. They first sit on the floor, unable to fly, wobbly on their legs and within a short space of time, die. There are no other symptoms, no diarrhoea, no breathing problems. The zebra finches were indoors, the cockatiels in an aviary outside, with no contact. The vet has done autopsies and tests and said it was neither bacterial or parasitical but cannot find any other explanation. I keep other species of birds and worry they are all going to die! Has anybody experienced anything like this?

Hi how are your birds doing? I hope you have not lost anymore. Have you found out what happened to the others?

Did your vet check for aspergillosis?

Acute and Chronic Aspergillosis in Birds: Causes, Signs, Treatment, and Prevention

If it's effected birds in 2 separate places this would make a lot of sense, as it can be given to them via there food. Sadly it may not be your fault, the food you have picked up may have already been contaminated. The syptoms you describe sound very much like this.

If seed gets damp it will grow a fungus which you can't always see with the naked eye, you should be able to smell a damp sort of cellar smell on the seed though. It can take less than 24 hours for these spores to develop. Hence I am so anal in sweeping out my aviaries every day very thoroughly.

Hope you get to the bottom of the cause soon.

Re: Cockatiels and finches dying

Thank you for suggestions. No more birds have died since the weekend. Vet is doing another post mortem on last bird that died, hoping to get results soon. Will mention aspergillosis to him.
