I need advice
Before you condem me for not taking my bird to the vet., I KNOW. I lost my job last September and am on the verge of being homeless myslef.
Let me tell you a little bit about Angel and I. We met about 25 years ago when i walked into a pet store where Angel was perched with a big sign in front of her that said "Dont touch me I bite" well I couldnt read and picked her up and played with her. (Angel is red lored Amazon)Well, My understanding was the pet store had her for almost 3 years an on one would buy her as she was so "mean: Since then Angel and I have been inseperable. She used to go everywhere with me. She would delight in sitting on the steering wheel and screaming with delight when we would have to turn. She took showers with me and well. did everything with me. Now I am freaking out. Every now and then at night Angel would seemingly fall to the bottom of her cage where she waould seem to thrash about. I would always run in and pick her up and calm her down. This would happen every few years. The last time this happened I noticed she was favoring one leg over another but when I took her in for her check up and to have her beak trimmed the vet didnt say they found anything wrong and nor did her one leg seem to bother her. Yesterday I was sitting at my pc and heard her grumbling and to my horror saw her trying to make her way down to the bottom of her cage and noticed he rone leg didnt seem to work at all. Today she had to use her beak as support to walk accros her perch but refused to try an get on my nad. I am sick and dont know what to do. Has anyone else ever had this happen and what was it? She will allow me to feel her leg and it doesnt seem to hurt her any. I know I am rambling but she has been my best friend for nearly 25 years and being in the finacial situation I am in is killing me. Angel is nearly 50. Could this be asign of having a stroke? |

Re: I need advice
Why don't you take Angel to the RSPCA or PDSA I'm sure they'd be able to help you in some way. I've just given this link to someone else but it may help if you ask there.

Re: I need advice
Thanks for the tip but there is no such thing here. Closest avian vet or anything of the sort is over ahundred miles away.
On a good note tho, last night she insisted on getting on my hand and coming out in the living room and was quite the lil piggy at dinner. She seems to be learning to walk with one leg and the use of her beak |

Re: I need advice
I sure wish I could. As I said previously the closest vet is over a hundred miles away and that isnt an avian vet, that would be 200 miles away. Having lost my job and unemployment ran out, would I hitchhike with a disabled bird under my jacket?
I have tried calling anyone I can think of and I pretty much get the same answer. no money? cant help, sorry she is at least trying now and insisting to get out of her cage. And eating. I take that as a good sign. Now all we have to do is figure out a way to help her along with only one leg. eating is a achallenge |

Re: I need advice
I'm so sorry to hear your story, may I ask where about you are?
I hate to say it as I know you can't afford it but she really does need to see an avian vet. It sounds like she has broken her leg, bird bones heal very quickly, could it be possible it's not healed correct so she is unable to use it? I think she really needs an Xray. You can get vet insurance for birds and it is very cheap, too late for this condition though sadly. I might know of some rescues that might be able to help you with vet treatment? I will certainly have a look round for you if I know roughly where you are.

Re: I need advice
I'm in Trinidad Co.
Today she is doing much better. I built ramps for her to sit on in her cage, which she seems to like much better. She has been insisting she come out and toodle around the house. Angel is quickly learning to use her beak to help her walk and is wanting food all the time. I take that as a pretty good sign. She seems to be able to move her leg in areas where she wants it to go but her foot/toes just wont work. Today I am going to try and figure out somne sort of ramps for her living room perch |

Re: I need advice
Oh wow, sorry I thought you were in the UK, I haven't got a clue in the US!
I would still recommend an avian vet, have you asked if your local vet has any knowledge of birds? Maybe they could at least do an Xray? You might find your local vet make also be able to help you with special repayments for the treatment? I'm glad she doesn't seem in pain, but I really don't like the sound of the way she is trying to get round .

Re: I need advice
I dont either but am at a loss. Liker I said the closet vet is a hundred miles away, literaly and th closest avian vet is nearly 200 and unless I rob a bank I have no way of getting anywhere. The U.S. is in a bad place right now and thousands have lost thier jobs, including me. It isnt good.
