Messy chops Balders cockatiel

Balders is looking a little scraggy.

It's not health related, I've been giving him cucumber and rocket, Spinach herbs and garlic.

He's not the most tidyist of birds, he preens himself normally and cleans his feet but due to the food I give him he does get in a mess.

He's had two sprays since I've had him about 4 ish weeks now. The first he really enjoyed the second he tolerated. He won't be sprayed at all now without flying off and I don't want to annoy him further.

I've let him have a wander along the window sill in my room where I leave a bowl of water for Timmy and Daisy to bathe in but he doesn't seem interested. He's got messy churchill chops highlighted futher because he's got a yellow head! I have no problem with him being a bit unkept but I don't want him to get in a complete mess! I have tried to rub his feather on his face when he wants a scratch but it takes a while and doesn't always get the crud out.

Any ideas?

Hmm I'm not sure sorry would he let you use a damp cloth?? Would that even work?? lol.

My oldest budgie never entertained her bath at all untill I introduced my new baby... he absolutely loves it and now they fight over it

He lets me pinch his beak and preen his cheeks with my fingers. It's a good idea though I'll give it a try tomorrow, didn't think of doing that. He doesn't seem phased by touching his head as long as he gets a scratch out of it at the end lol

Ah, finally I got him to stay still and enjoy a nice warm spray. He wouldn't entertain the idea of me wiping his face but thanfully his chops are nice and clean now.

Re: Messy chops Balders cockatiel

You might want to try taking him into the shower with you? Lots of birds enjoy the spray from the shower

You can buy special shower perches that stick to the tiles too.

It might be a good idea to also get him some multi-vits to add to the water which should help.

Birds should always have a minimun of 2 sprays a week for healthy feathers.

Try adding some Aloe Vera to the water when you spray him, this will also help the condition of his feathers.

My cockatiels also love to eat cooked corn, fresh cocount, red pepper and grapes

I've seen those shower perches but I'm not sure he'd enjoy that to much. He's in good nick feather wise it's just that he's not the cleanest of birds, especially as he's white it looks worse

I need to get some of that aloe vera but i'll do it slowly as I've heard it's bitter i'm still introducing him to knew things. He wasn't keen on much veg at first. He's eating basil leaves at the moment!

All great advice though thanks a lot.
