Garden Birds - feeding

I have ran out of bird seed and fat balls for my garden birds and I have heard that they do not digest white bread (neither do I by the way) but I have a brown wholemeal roll, reasonably fresh, bought 23rd Dec and some bananas which I had been keeping in the fridge so they are ripe but not over-ripe.

Would it be ok for me to feed the brown roll, crumbed down?

Would it be ok for me to feed the bananas at room temp, cut into small pieces?

Or should I just let them go hungry until tomorrow when I can go to the shop and get the right feed for them?

Re: Garden Birds - feeding

Thanks Janice! I shall remember your comment about chinese food left overs Wonder if they would also accept indian food scraps?

Birdies are now happily pecking away at the breadcrumbs whilst I chop the bananas up. When they have flown away, having enjoyed this course, I shall add the dessert. Must do this whilst the sun is shining.

Re: Garden Birds - feeding

Thanks Sullivan. I shall remember that too. I have since read that birdies should not be given oily things as this can spoil their feathers. They did not like the bananas very much so will go back to fat balls which you can get at the pet shops and supermarkets. I shall also crush some shelled nuts so that they are nice and small to be easily picked up and swallowed. They loved the buttered bread (crumbed) today. I shall see if I can get some nice raisins/sultanas for them tomorrow. They need plenty of energy to keep them warm in this cold weather.

Re: Garden Birds - feeding

Me dad bought home a bird feeder today he salvaged it from work. We've got a tall bird table effigy he made but it's not been secured in the ground yet. I'm going to fill it with a few sunflower seeds and a bit of mixed seed. We live near a river and right behind us is a little green me dad saw a duck and her babies hiding in the undergrowth! They must have been hiding from something because they never venture anywhere near us usually. Although the river near us is full of crap, trolleys wheels bricks and the like we get a very varied amount of wildlife. Geese, beautiful swan families and all sorts of mallards and of course seagulls. I saw a beautiful little wagtail in our garden today I thought it was a swallow at first but then I saw it's tail
