Sick Canary
I have a 8 year old male yellow canary who is sick. we had another bird who just died today who had the same symptoms but who had been sick for two months. She lost feathers starting from her chest, neck, head, and bum. Her throat looked very red and swollen. She wasn't quiet and still jumped around untill the last week and a half where she was quiet and on the bottom of the cage. The male lost all the feathers from the middle of her chest and his throat looks red and swollen too. He is quiet now too. What I dont understand is that the female was in a cage with her brother for a month and a half of being sick and the brother never caught anything. After i separated them I put her cage next to the yellow male canary and now he caught it. I dont really have the money to see a vet and I need some help here, I dont want to loose him as well. Is there any idea of what he has or now I might be able to help him? Hes currently just getting vitamin drops.
Sorry if this is a re post, I am new here and still learning the ropes |

Re: Sick Canary
Make sure you have plenty of heat. Either put a heat lamp in with him or make sure the room he is is warm. The warmth will help him heal.
Are you sure that they were not plucking each other? Canarys will fight, even male and feamle if left in a cage together. Resulting in feather loss. The swollen throat though sounds like Candidiasis which is a yeast infection of the crop and intestines. A PROBIOTIC yogurt SHOULD help this. Deff worth a go. As Candidiasis is an infection i urge you to not only check and spray for mites but disinfect everything aswell. I deff think its this -Candidiasis is a disease caused by a yeast that is common in hand-fed chicks. Candida can proliferate in the digestive tract and other organs, including the beak and respiratory system. Candida can also infect the skin, feathers, eyes, and reproductive tract - but this is more common in nonpsittacine birds (birds not in the parrot family). The severity of the infection depends on the age of the bird and the state of its immune system. Candida albicans most often affects the crop, as well as the upper digestive tract; but also affects the skin, respiratory tract, central nervous system and all other organs.

Re: Sick Canary
Untitled Document
here is a page with lots of info on it. Even a list of anti biotics that will be useful to fight it with. Fluconazole can be found on ebay, which is one of the drugs listed. But use at your own discrection. As without a diagnosis from an avain vet, you could make matters worse. Also do you smoke around your birds? Big no no
