Newspapers in bird cages

how safe is it to use ordinary newspaper in birds cages?

I use newspaper all the time. As i dont have a sence of smell i couldnt not smell anything wrong. So when my friends came over and told me he could smell ink fumes i have gotten rather worried.

Went to argos and bought a 15kg sack of sand to replace newspaper. But the bag is tiny and it simply will not go all around my cages =( i clean them out every 2-4 days

If you have a friendly fish and chip shop you could ask them if you could buy a pack of white newspaper that they use for wrapping fish and chips in. I get it free
