Re: What do you feed your parrots / macaws?

i have a kakarikis, small parrot from ausralia and new zealand.
we feed her fresh fruit, mango, banana, apple, melon, etc.... if summer fruits are not available breeder told us to feed her derfosted frozen. breeder gave her cockateil food and stated parrakeet food too. (she pinches my cockateils food too). millet, honey sticks, egg buscuits. i was told to make sure she also had some grit added to her seed. she also has cuttle fish and iodine block in her cage. and also loads of toys so she won't get bored. we were advised to let her out at least 3 hours per day. but we make it longer. forby her cage she has a wee house to go into that's at the opposite side of the room to her cage. she also comes onto the pc room with me for a wee while a day. sleeps on shelf beside me.
she had gone all evil for a few weeks but this has past now thank goodness. didn't attack dog, OH or myself. just my poor cockateil.
oops iv'e rambled, sorry.

Re: What do you feed your parrots / macaws?

my parrots usually have tidymix or johnstons & jeff and sometimes i add pretty bird and harrison pellets for something different, one of the greys has harrisons anyway but will then go around everybody elses cage for a taste of theirs.
my cockateils have a cockateil /parakeet mix , all of the birds have fresh fruit/veg available (even if they arent keen in the hope they might try it ) i change the fruit n veg around so it varies as to what they have . Avocado is a no no , its toxic to birds but they can have most other fruits and veggies, usually these types- broccoli, carrots, sweetcorn, broad beans, peas, runner beans, apple, grapes, orange, strawberries, pomegranite ,raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, mango, melon, tomato.
they also have millet and cuttlefish

My little Goffins cockatoo has a complete pellet as well as honeyed seed blobs - i make them myself and she loves them! - can be moulded to a stick and baked too - keeps them amused! Also plenty of fruit, a few nuts and veg, occasional pasta pieces, and plain cornflakes, some rice too, mines favorite thing is broccoli, ditto about the avocados although I have heard too much tomato seeds is not good for them, pretty much anything else fruit wise, mine also has some well boiled egg - also very popular and a good source of protein! Cuttlefish bones are also a must!!

I do never rely on domestic made food for my birds .I only buy and give branded food to my birds. That food are available on economical rates and good for birds in this sense that you may give every nutritional food to your birds.

Variety is the key with our flock, they get all sorts but their staple food is Johnson and Jeff low sunflower mix and tidymix and then every other day we offer a bowl of pellets usually Kaytee, Harrisons or Zupreem.
They get loads of table foods, fruit and veg too.

Re: What do you feed your parrots / macaws?

Thanks guys, mine have a mixture of seeds and Kaytee and variety of fruit and vegetables. They love the little steamed veg packs in an evening, one tends to pick out the peas and the other the sweetcorn but the broccoli, cauliflower and everything else gets eaten too !! They also love toast and crumpets for breakfast.
I give limited sunflower seeds as our previous Blue fronted amazon died at the age of 5 years from the avian equivalent of our heart / liver disease from the high fat content in the sunflowers which he used to pick out from everything else !! A lesson sadly learnt !!
