Hi,
My 2 year old hen is- 1. Lethargic, weak, quiet, not socialising with group 2. No strength in her legs- can't jump up onto ladder 3. Brown, runny poos 4. The comb is floppy at the back. 5. she eating but only small bits of food and drinking. She was peacking the grass yesterday and today. She has a fairly bad heavy infestatin of Red mights. We put Barrier Red Mite Concentrate on her last week and then we put Frontline Spot on cat on her yesterday. She is still abit unsteady on her feet as well. Re: Sick hen pls,pls help
Quote:
When my hens had this trouble I used to gently massage the crop in an upward movement and tilt them forward, they were 'sick' for want of a better word and problem solved. Best isolate her as hens can be very 'unkind' and pick on an unwell bird. |

Surely Frontline for cats is meant for cats not chickens. That will probably make her even worse.
Keep her warm on her own for a while with food and water and her favourite treats. And, most importantly, treat the chicken run and cage with powder or spray to deal with the red mite infestation. Good luck. |

Re: Sick hen pls,pls help
Hello to all
All the symptoms are very clear for the sick hen but to remove or for its treatment it is necessary to take the consultation with the animal husbandry doctors .

Re: Sick hen pls,pls help
You need to spray your whole chook house for red mite - they have come out in force this year I think because of the mild winter it didn't kill them off.
You can use frontline spot-on on chooks - I use it on mine - I think it's 4 drops for a bantam and 6 to 8 for a larger chook, you can also use frontline spray - it's not liscenced for chooks but an awful lot use it as the poultry spot ons have similar ingredients. I don't think there is an egg withold on it - but I like to make sure and don't eat the eggs for a week after dosing them. When did you last worm your chooks? - as a heavy burden of them can weaken birds too.
