Hello everyone
My first post here on this site. We have just gotten 2 domestic ducklings 4 days ago and noticed that one of them has a small white(cloudy) spot in the centre of each eye. We think he may be blind? He seems to be a bit unsure of his surroundings but also seems to get on quite well as well! When I wave my hand around the other one he takes note and moves away or pecks my fingers but not the little one. He does "sense" my hand and then also pecks my fingers. Please give us some advice? Must he be put down? Can we do anything and will he be able to live a normal life? I know it's difficult to help without pictures but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Blind domestic duckling (16 days old)??
Sounds like cataracts. Is he definitely a he? Only females are born with congenital cataracts, so his may be due to infectious or nutritional cause. Have a word with a vet they may do surgery but if that is not possible he may be better being PTS as he will not be able to find enough food nor be able to get away from danger, he will be an easy target for anything predatory.

Re: Blind domestic duckling (16 days old)??
Hi OllieBob
thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if he's a he ot not. I just read some websites and venting is something I am not ready to do without a vet. If he was a she would your previous post change at all? I mean is an operation the only solution for cataract? Thanks |
