Recommend Bird table food

What type of food would you recommend to give small birds like the robin, Siskin, blackbird and some other small types of birds i cant identify. I am currently giving them crushed up bread and some crushed apples. Any other type of food that i can give that we would use day to day?

Re: Recommend Bird table food

Sunflower hearts (not the one's still in the skin/shell) are a big hit with most birds, if you try some look for nice plump seeds, many are dehydrated (small and shriveled) this time of year and the birds much prefer the good quality stuff, it makes all the difference. Siskins, goldfinches and green finches also love Niger seed

A great place for bird food is Vine House Farm bird foods, wild bird food, wild bird seed, online bird food shop They are a little more expensive, but the quality is excellent as they grow their own and store it well.

EDIT: It's also worth mentioning that it's now the time of year to stop putting whole nuts out, except in a proper nut feeder. You can but chopped nuts out though. Any whole nuts taken by adult birds back to their young can choke the baby birds. Also no more bread because this is the least nutritional food you can give. It fills their tummies so they feel full, but hold no nutritional goodness at all. So birds eating bread on a regular basis will be weaker birds, not good for breeding this year, and again if they take bread back to their young they will be weak too.

They really eat hard boiled eggs? I got try that. I had an inkling that too much bread would do more harm then good, how about wholemeal bread or brown bread? I know that porrdige oats are bad becasue they inflate the birds stomach. I will have to get some of those nuts.

Re: Recommend Bird table food

I wouldn't give bread at all hun, it's just safer and there are so many other foods out there that are much better. Especially this time of year when they are building up ready for breeding

Re: Recommend Bird table food

There are a number of good things to put out. Fruit is always good. Whole grain bread is nice, especially if you soak it in any left over fat that you have. Vegetables can be used. I would not suggest meat, as it will attract predators. Be sure to keep the table clean. Don't let food rot.
Good luck!

Re: Recommend Bird table food

I bought a hanging one and its rubbish. The wind blows it about so much that the branches of the tree knocks all the food off. Argos do one ive been looking at called a feeding station and it has bits for fat balls etc. There is also a cool one listed here on ebid that is like a dome but it's too dear for me..
