urgent help from lovebird owners/experts
im posting on behalf of my mum. She has a lovebird (sex unknown) which she has had for about 3 years. She recently bought another one about 2 months ago which she kept in a separate cage, again sex unknown. She put the cages right next to each other, and in the last 3 weeks the new bird has been tearing up its newspaper and with some of it has made a pile, but also it has been passing some to the other bird through the cage bars. I persuaded my mum to let them out of their cages and see what happened. Immediately, the original bird went and fed the new one (which it gladly accepted). I was really hopeful at this point that they were forming a good bond. Since then, they have been out together for half an hour everyday, under supervision, with no problems. BUT - my mum came downstairs yesterday to find the original bird had plucked lots of its own feathers out! With birds, normally i see this as a sign of stress, but i think it unlikely as the new bird has been there for some time now. So am i right in thinking that this could be pure frustration?! Is the original bird desperate to spend more time with the new one? I am trying to persuade my mum to put them together in a neutral cage for an hour a day to start with, but she is very nervous about this (and rightly so). Any suggestions?? Am i on the right lines?? Thanks in advance for your help
