budgie lost use of his legs

I'm posting on behalf of my mum.

She has 2 male budgies a few years old.

Lately one of them was constantly holding one of his legs up and just standing on one. She took him to the vet who said there wasnt much that could be done and that he'd possibly hurt it and it would heal.

Then he lost the use of his other leg so the vet said to keep him in a box so he couldnt fly and injure himself

he has been in this state for a few weeks now and showing no signs of improving at all.

Should he be put to sleep?

Does anyone know whats going on or experienced this?

Thanks for any help.

The vet told you to keep him in a box for how long. Did they not make another appointment. I would take him to another vet.

Re: budgie lost use of his legs

I have 40 budgies and find that alot of vets are not very good with birds unless they are avian vets,he should"nt be put in a box he should be in his cage with no perches,it is hard with birds and if both legs are gone and he is no better think he may have to be PTS as they dont like being on the ground, alot of budgies suffer from gout which is hard to treat.

Re: budgie lost use of his legs

My Budgie who I had to have put to sleep last week showed similar signs. She'd broken her leg a few years ago, I took her to the vets and they wanted me to PTS there and then - I wouldn't. Unfortunately she was old (16) and had a lot wrong with her in the end, but I'd suggest you see another vet. Hope he's ok soon

Re: budgie lost use of his legs

It wasn't that long ago that I bought a baby violet bugdie (Geraldine). I had her but a week before I noticed she wasn't standing on one leg (didn't move it at all). I called the vet who said the same thing-it's just sore it will heal itself. This was the vet that I take my dog to.
I hunted out the only avian vet in the area and brought her in... she had a dislocated leg. He said that gone unhealed she could have lost the use of it all together.
The vet was confident he could fix it... However, in the end she didn't make it. She was a very healthy baby and handled the anaesthetic just fine. The leg was fixed and all was good. He just thought that it was too much stress on her.
It's amazing how quickly she touched our hearts
Hope this helps.
My advice from this experience is to call an avian vet right away (most areas have one) and he can tell you what to do and if it necessary to bring your pet in.
