Budgie is unwell - any ideas?

My female budgie seems to have taken unwell. She has been quiet for about a week, and seemed to be fluffing up her feathers, which i know can be a stress thing. I put this down to leaving them under my brothers care for a few days and he put them on the dining room table where the cat would have been able to sit by them!! idiot. so i figured maybe she was a bit stressed from that.

However, i noticed on friday that her vent is covered in feaces. she was filthy and there was a large amount of congealed poop hanging from her.
so we took her out and gave her a clean up, and gave the whole cage and eveerything in it a really good disinfectant.
unfortunately the poop is building up again, and she is once again covered.
she is eating normally, but is very quiet (which is very unlike her). she is basically just sitting on her perch.

i googled for a possible answer and it suggested it could be an intestinal thing. im gonna give the vet a ring tomorrow and hopefully he will be able to see her. but i think i might bring home another cage and seperate her from my male. mainly coz i dont want it to be passed onto him.

anyone got any ideas as to what it could be?

Re: Budgie is unwell - any ideas?

im sorry i have no idea... you have done the best you can with her, good luck at the vets.

I may be wrong in saying this so other members please correct me if I am but If your male and female birds are very attached I wouldnt seperate them as it may cause her more stress. Chances are if she does have an infection if your male bird was going to catch it he would have done so by now.

Let us know how you get on xx

i was wondering about that. they are quite attached, he is always pruning her, and more so since she has been feeling down!
i would keep the cages side by side, but i dunno, might cause her to stress more.

Re: Budgie is unwell - any ideas?

Sounds like she might be egg bound. This will put presure on her internal organs and possibly cause nerve damage and paralasis in her legs and feet. Get her to an avian vet asap.
