anyone want to lend me a cock

just wandering if you could lend a cock bird to stud , think i have an grey hen as he/she is sitting at bottom of cage on a ball of paper and wont move from it except to eat and also goes for me now and again when i try to move it , we only bought the grey about 6 weeks ago and was told it was about 9 years old , but he/she sits on my shoulder and drops her wings down and tries to feed me and now she sitting on a ball of paper , just wandering if you can use birds for stud or they have to be bonded. if so does anyone have a grey cock they no longer want and need it rehomed .

You cannot use a bird stud. They have to be bonded and both male and female will take care of the chicks. If you do find a male african grey there is still no garauntee that they will mate, brds are very fussy, and they may not even get on so you may end up having 2 birds that you will have to keep completley seperate. Also, I don't think they will mate in cages (although I could be wrong) I think they would also need an avairy.

People may breed birds in cages that small, but it doesn't mean they should! Puppy farmers breed dogs in small cages too, and we all know that is wrong! To have the best/healthiest breeding birds they should have large areas to fly in and direct sunlight (or the lights that imatate it), and an avairy is the best thing.

All the people I know that keep birds at least put them outside in the sun in the summer. They do get goodness from the sun, the same as we do, but I'm sure there are alot of people that just leave them shut inside all the time (and some people that never let them out their cages to have a fly ). I think you can get a vitamin suppliment for them. I presume these are birds they are trying to sell? Most places that seell birds keep them inside all the time, usually inside small cages though.

I don't know anything about owls, but would've thought that they would prefere to be outside?

Personally I don't agree with keeping them inside all the time, but there aren't many rules as far as keeping or breeding birds go

As long as they are being fed, have fresh water, and the cages/avairies they are in give them enough room to spread their wings then there is nothing that can be done Even having space for a bird to fly isn't taken into consideration, which is why so many people think the can buy them and keep them shut in their cages 24/7, and why so many end up screaming or plucking.

Re: anyone want to lend me a cock

Not all birdkeepers should be tarred with the same brush...My aviary was designed to give them space and fresh air....

My 'Indoor' birds are wheeled out into the fresh air on nice days...

One guy had a go at me in a pub because he didn't agree with keeping birds behind wire mesh...But I know for a fact he was a regular at McDonalds with his kids for a chicken meal.

Re: anyone want to lend me a cock

I don't tar all bird keepers with the same brush, I have a pet bird myself! She eats better than we do, has a minimum of 4 hrs out of her cage a day (and that is a minimum, it is normally alot more), has more toys than my little boy, which are in her cage, on her playstand, in a basket on the table, and some kept over to rotate so she doesn't get bored, and is also in her outside cage on nice days. Unfortunatly not all birds are so well cared for.

I like the avairy, I would love one in my garden, but it's too small and the neighbours would probably complain. Maybe one day when we eventually move!
