dont get me wrong im not saying its the right thing to do !!
just saying they can breed in smaller spaces if someone is not privelaged to have much space .

I think most pet birds it is recommended that they have a minimum of 10/12 hrs sleep a night, so 12/14 hrs of light. Breeding birds do need more light though, although I don't know how much as I don't breed.

If people are willing to breed there birds in small cages, then what else are they going to cut back on? Breeding birds isn't about putting 2 together and letting them get on with it. They need extra vitamins, and space to be healthy. Also having a male and female doesn't mean they will get on, birds are very fussy, and most of them mate for life. If you end up with two that don't get on then they can kill eachother, especially if they don't have enough room!

I'm not meaning to seem like I'm picking on you, I just want to make sure that someone reading this will notice that just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should!

If you look around advertising sites there are so many people rehoming birds because people don't research first. They think they can get a bird, put it in a cage and feed it seed and it should be fine, then when it starts screaming or plucking they try to get rid. The poor birds end up being passed from home to home. Some are lucky and will end up somewhere where they are cared for properly, but not all of them. There are also loads of adverts for babies for sale as people see the money they get sold for and want to cash in, but to properly rear babies then there shouldn't be hardly any profit being made from the babies! If someone is making loads of money then they have cut back on food/care the birds need. Sorry, rant over!

Re: anyone want to lend me a cock

i have done my research , i have had greys for a few years , just never tried to breed them , but when i found out i had a hen ( i asked about what to do and also read up on it ) i decided to try , and im lucky enough that i got a male grey and they get along fine in my shed in a 5ft a 3ft x 2ft cage with lots of light seed and fruit and veg , they have only been in the cage for a couple of weeks and at first did try and peck eachother , but now they have settled down and get on great and i know they are happy because you can hear them singing and whistling most of the day ( hope my neighbours dont mind ) and also i have them on camera and there forever playing with their toys .
