Advice for Rescued Cockatiel

Hey there, I'm new here so hello.

I've recently just taken in a Cockatiel from a girl who didn't look after him properly. I think he is 4 years old, as she says that she rescued him first of all off a woman who was going to put him down, 3 years ago. He has also had his wings clipped so that he couldn't fly away from the last 'carers'

Ive been with him now for three days, and hes not changed that much yet, he hisses at everything that moves, I thought that he was just getting used to the room, untill i got told more info from the girl I got him off.

He shared the cage with 2 budgies, and there was a dog that used to bark and shake the cage if he even made a noise.

He's getting better, I have long conversations with him. That he really enjoys that, but hates is if I approach the cage.

The advice I am after, is, because he's used to company, shall i go and get another bird from somewhere? If so, what would be the best birds to mix with cockatiels?

Also, because he's 4 years old, will he always be this way around people?

Re: Advice for Rescued Cockatiel

Poor thing, you need to give hime a few weeks to settle down, getting another cockatiel might a great idea to give him some company though in time once he has settled and got used to you, I wouldn't get any other species of bird though. You will need to introduce them slowly, i.e. cages together etc.

Good luck with him.

Re: Advice for Rescued Cockatiel

Hey, thanks for your Reply!
Hopefully after a couple of weeks he will be ok. I brought him a rope toy yesterday and he absolutely loves it and hes started singing!

Download Jager.wav - Kiwi6.com Here is a file of him singing

Ive got two more cages lying around, i might go get a baby Cockatiel and put him next to him
