Just got a canary

Hello everybody,

A couple of days ago my brother found a canary perched on his bathroom sink, we phoned the local vet and the RSPCA to see if anyone had reported a missing one but no one seemed to so it looks like we might be keeping him/her for a while, it has a blue tag on its leg which just has the number 3 on it which makes me think hes from a breeder. I have tried to take care of it the best I can so far by giving it a mix of different food and making a perch for it but I am still not sure what I am doing and a lot of the sites seem to be saying different things so could someone give me some advice. I would also like to know if it is male or female, I will get a good picture of it as well.

Welcome to PF!

Must have been weird to find a bird just happily perched on your sink, huh?
You should still keep an eye out for the owner, just for the sake of maybe finding the owner. Until then, you should make your way to your local pet shop to buy a proper diet for the bird.
At a bare minimum, a canary should have A good mixture of canary seed, cuttlebone or mineral grit, and fresh water to stay happy and healthy.

You can give him/her some boiled egg(for protein), some fresh fruit(for vitamins and minerals), and greens(also for protein). Give the bird these only about twice a week.
A tasty treat like honey stick or millet spray now and then rounds out a good canary diet, and he/she will love nibbling on a good honey stick

Remember, fresh water at all times is a must!

Hope I helped!
