Is this legal?

Last month I was on Holiday in Wales and we had to buy some cat food in a pet shop. I walked around the pet shop and there were 4 yellow birds (budgies I assume) in a cage about 40cm high, 40cm wide and maybe 60 cm long, I dont know but something like that. One of the budgies was pushing its self through the bars and trying to get out really badly, it couldn't but almost half its body was through the bars.

This broke my heart. I wanted to buy them then and there but I would only be funding the petshop and I have no clue how to keep birds.

I tried to ring the RSPCA for some advice as I dont know the legalities of keeping birds. I never got through to the RSPCA though.

I feel so ashamed that I never did anything.

But the birds could not fly in the cage and I am wondering whether anyone knows if this is allowed. It is sick in my mind. A bird should be able to fly and spread its wings not be in a horrible cage.

Re: Is this legal?

As far as I know a bird should have room in a cage to allow it to fully spread it's wings. The bars should also not be spaced so far apart that the bird can get any part of its body stuck in it.

The shop must be inspected in order for it to have a licence I assume, maybe contact your local council.

Sorry i cant be of more help

Sorry just realised you were in wales at the time, do rspca cover wales? I would contact them... if its not rspca it would be another organisation. Can you remember the name of the petshop and where it was??

Re: Is this legal?

you should get it looked in to or at least report it to someone, this is deemed as crulty, this can cause the birds injury and stress

That's right and "fully spread it's wings" means in both directions without touching the sides

Re: Is this legal?

I dont know if they could spread their wings or not, they may have been able to, but surely it is cruel to keep a bid without giving it room to actually fly. I would hate to be stuck in a cage only big enough for my to turn around. Birds have wings for a reason.
