Breeding fifes

I have bred fife and border canaries for a few year now but i have never done colour breeding. Is it true that if i supply food colouring to my breeding pair of yellow fifes they will produce red factors next year?

Canaries not my forte...but a neighbour only breeds them.I'll ask and post his opinions later if I can catch him in.

Re: Breeding fifes

Not sure but I bought a couple of colour fed birds last year and this years young have been slightly coloured. Unfortunately, the hen preferred a white cock bird so the colour is diluted but definately there. (I breed them for fun in an aviary and they please themselves)

Re: Breeding fifes

The red factor is a gene. All colour feeding will do is colour feathers that are growing when you feed the colour food. As soon as they moult they will be back to their normal colour

Re: Breeding fifes

I'm sure he will tell you the red factor comes from crossing with one of the siskins
